A taste of Suzhou

Bai Sheng Ren Jia (Wuzhong)

百盛人家

A straightforward Jiangsu restaurant on the Grand Canal in Wuzhong, doing regional classics well and without ceremony. It is where you go for the canonical Suzhou dishes — crisp fried eel in sweet-and-sour sauce, claypot rice — at a price that lets you order four of them.

The house favourites

What to order

Point at the Chinese. Staff will understand it even where the menu has no English at all.

  • Suzhou-style deep-fried eel in sweet-and-sour sauce (响油鳝糊 / 脆鳝)
  • Claypot rice with braised pork, bamboo shoot and potato (砂锅菜饭)

What it actually tastes like

The sweet-and-sour here is genuinely sweet, Suzhou-style. Eel is a staple local protein, not an exotic dare, and arrives as shredded or crisp strips rather than looking like an eel.

Allergens in this kitchen

fishshellfishsoygluten/wheatsesameegg

This is the kitchen, not one dish. Woks, fryers, blanching water and utensils are shared in almost every Chinese restaurant, so for a serious allergy treat the whole premises as the unit rather than ordering around it.
