Discover Suzhou
Panmen Scenic Area
盘门三景
The only surviving combined land-and-water city gate in China, with its original double gate, barbican and canal locks, plus the Ruiguang Pagoda and the humpbacked Wumen Bridge. It is the clearest surviving evidence of how a Chinese walled canal city actually worked.

The story
What makes this place special
Panmen is the only surviving city gate in China that combines a water gate and a land gate side by side, with its barbican enclosure intact - the point being that Suzhou was a canal city and goods came in by water. Three things here are grouped locally as the Three Sights of Panmen: the gate itself, Ruiguang Pagoda, and Wumen Bridge. Ruiguang Pagoda is a seven-storey octagonal timber-frame tower around 43 metres high; accounts of its date differ, with a Three Kingdoms foundation in 247 under Sun Quan commonly cited and a Northern Song rebuilding around 1004, and its sealed chambers yielded Five Dynasties and Song treasures including the famous pearl reliquary stupa. Wumen Bridge over the Grand Canal is the largest surviving single-arch stone bridge in Jiangsu.
What you’ll discover
A walled compound in the south-west corner of the old city: you climb onto the city wall and the gate tower and look down on the double gate, the barbican and the Grand Canal passing outside, with Wumen Bridge arching over the water beside it. Inside the park are Ruiguang Pagoda, gardens and a stretch of restored wall walk. The canal here is a working waterway with barge traffic, which is the thing that makes the gate make sense.
A little local insight
Good to know before you go
- Go up on the wall. The whole interest of Panmen is seeing how a water gate worked, and that only reads from above; at ground level it is a park.
- Climbing Ruiguang Pagoda is not always permitted - access to the tower has been closed at times. Check at the gate rather than planning a visit around it.
- Stand on Wumen Bridge at sunset. It is the largest single-arch stone bridge in the province, the canal runs straight west from it, and it is the best photograph on the site.
- The canal boats from Shantang Street run down this way, so arriving by water rather than by taxi turns a minor sight into a good hour.
- There are evening performances and a night-opening ticket here, which is a different product from the daytime one - worth checking what is on if you are in Suzhou for a second evening.
When to come
Late afternoon into sunset, for the light on the canal and the bridge. Quiet most of the year - this is one of Suzhou's least crowded sights.
Getting around
Limited. The park paths and gardens at ground level are flat and paved and a wheelchair can use them, but the city wall, the gate tower and the pagoda are all reached by steep stone stairs with no lift, and those are the reasons to come. Wumen Bridge is a stepped stone arch. With a bad knee the wall climb is short but steep; a wheelchair user will see the gate from below only.
Worth knowing before you go
Climb the city wall and walk east to Wumen Bridge for the classic view of boats passing under the arch with the pagoda behind - the best photograph in Suzhou at sunset.
