The story

What makes this place special

Tongli is a canal town just outside Suzhou that has kept the shape of an old Wu-region market settlement - 55 bridges, the best-known being Taiping, Jili and Changqing, which are crossed in sequence for luck at weddings, births and birthdays. Its outstanding building is the Retreat and Reflection Garden, Tuisi Yuan, built between 1885 and 1887 for the dismissed official Ren Lansheng - the name says he was retreating to reflect on his conduct - and added to the Classical Gardens of Suzhou World Heritage listing in 2001.

What you’ll discover

A compact grid of canals with stone-paved lanes, old stone bridges every few hundred metres, whitewashed houses coming straight down to the water, and hand-poled boats. The Retreat and Reflection Garden is the set piece: a long, narrow garden running east-west, built as a sequence from residence through courtyards to a water garden where the buildings seem to float on the pond - unusual among Suzhou gardens for being laid out linearly rather than around a central pool. The town also has several merchant residences, a pearl tower site, and the privately run Chinese Sex Culture Museum, which is an unexpected and genuinely serious collection.

A little local insight

Good to know before you go

  • Tongli is the water town to choose if you only do one from Suzhou. It is closer than Zhouzhuang, substantially less packaged, and it has a World Heritage garden inside it, which no other water town does.
  • The Retreat and Reflection Garden is the reason to come and is often treated as a sideshow by visitors who came for the canals. Go in early, before the day groups, and walk it slowly west to east as it was designed to be read.
  • Go beyond the ticketed core. The lanes outside the main loop are residential and quiet within two minutes' walk.
  • The Sex Culture Museum is not a joke exhibit - it is the relocated collection of the sociologist Liu Dalin and is one of the more interesting small museums in China. Mention it or not depending on the company you are travelling in.
  • Overnight, or come before 9am. Like every Jiangnan water town the difference between Tongli at 8am and Tongli at 2pm is the difference between a canal village and a market crush.

When to come

Early morning or evening. Spring and autumn, and misty mornings suit the canals. Avoid weekends and the May and October holiday weeks.

Getting around

Hard. The lanes are flat but narrow and surfaced in worn, uneven flagstone, and every canal crossing is a stepped stone humpback bridge without ramps - the 55 bridges are the attraction and the obstacle at once. The Retreat and Reflection Garden has raised thresholds, steps between levels and a rockery. Boats need a step into a low hull. A wheelchair user can do stretches of one bank with a strong companion; a bad knee is manageable with a slow pace.

Worth knowing before you go

The ticket is only checked at a handful of inner sites; if you arrive in the evening after the booths close you can walk the lanes for nothing. Staying one night is the real trick - the town empties after the day-trip buses leave.
