Discover Xi'an
Yongxingfang Food Street
永兴坊
A compact Tang-style courtyard block beside the eastern city wall, organised into Guanzhong, northern-Shaanxi and southern-Shaanxi lanes so you can eat your way across the whole province in one visit. Less chaotic than the Muslim Quarter and strong on intangible-heritage snacks.

The story
What makes this place special
Yongxingfang sits inside the eastern city wall, just within Zhongshan Gate, on the site of one of the 108 wards of Tang Chang'an and traditionally identified as the location of the residence of Wei Zheng, the chancellor who served Emperor Taizong. The present street is a 2010s development: the city assembled around a hundred regional food traditions from Shaanxi's eleven prefectures and 107 counties into one block, several of them provincially listed as intangible cultural heritage - Zichang pancakes among them.
What you’ll discover
A compact grid of grey-brick lanes and courtyards of recent construction, lined with small stalls each selling one regional Shaanxi dish - roujiamo, biangbiang noodles, liangpi, hulatang, oil-splashed noodles, persimmon cakes, fried dough. The signature act is shuaiwan jiu: you drink a small bowl of rice spirit and smash the bowl on a pile, which happens continuously and loudly in the main square. Eating your way through takes an hour or two.
A little local insight
Good to know before you go
- This is a curated food court dressed as a street, and the point is breadth: you can eat ten county specialities from across Shaanxi in one block that you would otherwise have to travel the province for. Judge it on that, not authenticity.
- Eat small portions from many stalls rather than a full bowl from one. Most stalls will sell half portions if you ask.
- The bowl-smashing is the attraction people come for and the thing locals roll their eyes at. Do it once if you want the photograph; it costs very little and the bowls are made for it.
- It is quieter and more food-focused than the Muslim Quarter, which is the other Xi'an eating street - go here if the Muslim Quarter crowds defeated you.
- It is immediately inside Zhongshan Gate, so it combines with a stretch on the city wall's eastern side; you can come down off the wall straight into it.
- Go at dinner time on a weekday. Weekend evenings and holidays are shoulder to shoulder and you spend the time queueing rather than eating.
When to come
Early evening on a weekday. Avoid Chinese public holidays and weekend nights. It runs year round and is largely outdoors, so spring and autumn are most comfortable.
Getting around
Good. The lanes are new, flat and paved with no steps, wide enough for a wheelchair, and stalls serve at street level with outdoor seating. Accessible toilets are provided. The practical problem is crowding at peak hours rather than terrain - go early. Easy for a bad knee, with plenty of places to sit.
Worth knowing before you go
This is where the 'smash-the-bowl liquor' (摔碗酒) ritual started - you down a shot of rice wine and hurl the clay bowl at a wall. Cheap, loud and the best photo you will get here.
