A taste of Xinjiang

Loulan Mikao

楼兰秘烤

One of Urumqi's best-regarded grill houses, built around its signature small kebabs cooked over charcoal with the house spice mix. A full Xinjiang grill dinner here means skewers, nan, a cold dish and a plate of noodles between a few people.

¥70–90≈ US$10Ranked No. 2 on Ctrip's Urumqi must-eat list256 Qinyuan Road, Shuimogou District, Urumqi; also a branch at Qidaowan.

Why come here

A place worth making time for

Widely recommended as the kebab restaurant to use in Urumqi in Chinese travel guides; no verifiable award.

What to order

Point at the Chinese. Staff will understand it even where the menu has no English at all.

  • Lamb kebabs (烤肉串)
  • Grilled lamb ribs (烤羊排)
  • Nan baked with lamb (馕坑肉)
  • Cold numbing chicken (椒麻鸡)

What it actually tastes like

Kebabs are cumin-and-chilli heavy and deliberately interleave cubes of pure lamb fat with the lean meat — the fat is the point, not a mistake. Jiaomaji is served cold and is strongly numbing from Sichuan pepper oil.

Allergens in this kitchen

gluten/wheatsesamesoy

This is the kitchen, not one dish. Woks, fryers, blanching water and utensils are shared in almost every Chinese restaurant, so for a serious allergy treat the whole premises as the unit rather than ordering around it.
