Wuyi rock tea with a core-zone maker, Fujian
Rock tea is the one Chinese tea where the roast is as important as the leaf, and the roasting is done over weeks in low charcoal heat. Watching it and tasting the same cultivar at different roast levels in one sitting is a lesson you cannot get from a shop.

Picture your day
In the Wuyishan scenic area you visit a maker working in the Zhengyan core zone, walk the ravine gardens the tea is named after, and sit through a tasting flight across the terroir tiers. The craft itself is listed as national intangible cultural heritage: a ten-step process that includes sun-withering the leaf on bamboo trays, repeated precision shaking to oxidise the leaf edges, and charcoal roasting in underground chambers, the technique that gives rock tea its character and the part worth watching.
The access, explained
Nothing is closed to the public, and the quality of the day depends entirely on whose house you are in. Learn the tiers before you go, because they are what sellers exploit: Zhengyan is the core zone, Banyan the half-rock periphery, Zhoucha the riverside flats, and retail copy routinely presents Banyan leaf as matching core quality. Named micro-sites such as Zhuke carry a premium justified by tradition more than by documentation. We could not confirm any programme that puts visitors with a named national-level heritage inheritor, and the official heritage page names no individual masters at all, so treat any such claim as the operator's.
Planning the details
How to arrange it. Through a Wuyishan operator or a specialist tea importer who already buys from the maker; the importer route is the one that gets you into a working roasting room rather than a showroom. Allow a few weeks. Nearest access is Wuyishan city, by high-speed rail or air; no permit.
When to go. Picking is late April to mid-May. Roasting runs from early summer into autumn, so for the charcoal chambers go between June and October rather than at harvest.
Ask for written confirmation of the date, duration, guide language, transport, admission and cancellation terms. Any restricted access must be confirmed by the venue.

Good to know
The whole Wuyi market runs on origin claims that cannot be checked by a visitor, including the Da Hong Pao mother-tree lineage, and the correct response is to buy what you liked in the cup rather than what came with the best story. Also decide what you want: Wuyishan is a national park with its own crowds, and a tea day there is a half day indoors with an expert, not a scenic outing.
