The character of the place

Why stay here

35 suites — Scott Dunn counts 34 suites and one villa — in low stone and timber pavilions on the summit of Lion Hill, the wooded hill that rises out of the middle of Lijiang's UNESCO-listed Old Town. Every suite has its own courtyard or terrace. The site adjoins the Wangu Pavilion, the tower at the top of the hill.

It is built on top of the thing you came to see. From the terraces you look down onto the tiled roofs and canals of the Old Town with Jade Dragon Snow Mountain behind, and the walk down into the lanes takes a few minutes from the garden gate rather than a taxi. No other hotel in Lijiang has that position, and it cannot be built again.

Make the stay your own

Rooms worth asking for

A top-floor Deluxe Suite for the terrace over the town and the mountain. Scott Dunn's advisers single out room 122 as the only one with a clear, unobstructed view of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain — ask for it by number.

Note the exact room or suite name before opening the booking provider, along with any connecting-room, step-free access or celebration requests.

At the table

Dining & the evening ahead

Aman's usual single-restaurant model with Yunnan and Western menus. No Michelin or Black Pearl listing confirmed.

Request restaurant availability alongside your stay. Tasting menus, private dining and dietary arrangements should be confirmed separately.

Time for yourself

Spa, pool & wellbeing

An Aman Spa, which at this group is a reason to book rather than an amenity.

Ask which facilities are included with your room, whether treatments require advance reservations, and whether any seasonal closures affect your stay.

Before you decide

Most suites do not have the mountain view the brochures lead with; courtyard-view suites look at a wall and a tree. Lijiang Old Town below is one of the most heavily commercialised heritage sites in China — bars, loudspeakers and souvenir shops from mid-morning until late — and a hilltop above it does not fully escape the noise. Access is up a hill: vehicles can reach the entrance but the Old Town approach on foot is a genuine climb at 2,400 metres, which matters on the first day. Aman's published suite count and Scott Dunn's differ by one.

Location. Summit of Lion Hill, inside Dayan Old Town, Gucheng District. Lijiang Sanyi airport is about 30km.
