A taste of Chengdu
Yu Zhi Lan
玉芝兰
Chef Lan Guijun's tiny private dining room serving a long tasting menu of refined, mostly un-spicy Sichuan cooking — Chengdu's only two-star restaurant.

What to order
Point at the Chinese. Staff will understand it even where the menu has no English at all.
- Hand-pulled gold-thread noodles in clear broth (金丝面)
- Chicken-stock velvet tofu (鸡豆花)
- Market-driven tasting menu (当日品鉴菜单)
What it actually tastes like
Refined rather than fiery: the hallmark here is clear, almost transparent stock, and textures - slippery, gelatinous, velvety - that Western diners often read as unfamiliar before they read as luxurious. Dried seafood and offal appear. Expect restrained 麻 má rather than a chilli assault.
Allergens in this kitchen
This is the kitchen, not one dish. Woks, fryers, blanching water and utensils are shared in almost every Chinese restaurant, so for a serious allergy treat the whole premises as the unit rather than ordering around it.
