Discover Dali
Erhai Lake Cruise
洱海游船
Scheduled boats cross Erhai from Xiaguan or Caicun pier, stopping at Nanzhao Fengqing Island and Jinsuo Island with Bai three-course tea performances on board. It is the standard way to see Cangshan's full 19-peak wall from the water.

The story
What makes this place special
Scheduled sightseeing boats have run on Erhai for decades, and since the lake protection rules tightened from 2017 they are the main legitimate way to be out on the water: private boating from the shore is restricted. The long route traditionally runs from Xiaguan port at the southern end, calling at Longkan jetty near Dali old town, with stops at Xiaoputuo, the small temple on its rock in the lake, and Nanzhao Folk Island, the lake's second largest island, which has a white marble Guanyin figure and a reconstructed Nanzhao palace. Reports of the northern terminus differ between Taoyuan, near Butterfly Spring, and Shuanglang, and timetables have changed; the long route has generally run twice a day with a shorter return service from Longkan.
What you’ll discover
A large multi-deck boat with an auditorium inside, where a Bai song and dance set accompanies the three-course tea ceremony, santaocha: a bitter first cup, a sweet second and an aftertaste third. Between performances you go out on deck for the open water, with Cangshan's whole nineteen-peak wall on the west side. The boat ties up at Xiaoputuo for about ten minutes and at Nanzhao Folk Island for around forty, which is enough to walk the island's main path.
A little local insight
Good to know before you go
- Board at Longkan, near the old town, rather than trekking to Xiaguan port. The long route picks up there about an hour after it starts and you lose nothing worth seeing.
- The reason to do this is the view of Cangshan from the middle of the lake, which you cannot get any other way now that private boats are restricted. The tea ceremony and the dancing are a package item, not the attraction.
- Stay on deck. Almost everyone sits inside for the show and the best hour of the trip passes outside the window.
- Nanzhao Folk Island is modern reconstruction. Forty minutes is the right amount of time for it; do not plan around it.
- Check the day's sailings and the actual terminus before you buy. Schedules, ports and routes have changed repeatedly and third-party listings go stale. Buy through the operator or a mainstream platform on the day or the day before.
- It is windy and cold on the water even on a warm day, and the sun off the lake is strong. Take a windproof layer and sun protection.
When to come
Morning sailings, for calm water and the clearest view of Cangshan before afternoon cloud and wind. October to April for clear air; the summer rains often leave the mountain invisible from the lake.
Getting around
Boarding is over a gangway from a fixed jetty, which is manageable with help, and the main deck and the auditorium are level once aboard. Upper decks are reached by steep stairs only. Nanzhao Folk Island involves a sloped landing and stepped paths and is hard in a wheelchair. Toilets on board are cramped. Tell the operator in advance if you need assistance boarding.
Worth knowing before you go
The cruise includes a scripted Bai song-and-dance and tea show plus a shopping stop — if you want the lake rather than the performance, hire a private boat at Shuanglang or just ride the corridor instead.
