Baiyun Mountain
白云山
The green hill north of the city, a national scenic area that Guangzhou residents climb at dawn. Paths run up through Yuntai Garden and Mingchun Valley to Moxing Ridge, the highest point around the city.

The story
What makes this place special
Baiyun Mountain rises to 427 metres on the northern edge of the city, its highest point the Moxing Ridge, long nicknamed the 'first peak under the southern sky'. Several of the classical 'Eight Sights of Guangzhou' were located here — the spring at Pupu Gully, the evening view from Baiyun, the sea of pines — though few of those scenes survive in recognisable form, because the city has grown around and up to the mountain's foot.
What you’ll discover
A large forested hill park with several separate entrances, a cable car from the south side, and a road to the upper levels. Walking up from the main south gate takes an hour or more on paved paths; the cable car does the same climb in minutes. Up top there are terraces and teahouses with a view over the whole city when the air is clear, a landscaped garden area at Yuntai, and a large walk-through aviary and valley area in the Mingchun Valley section. On a weekend morning it is full of local people walking up for exercise, which is the mountain's real function.
A little local insight
Good to know before you go
- Take the cable car up and walk down. Doing it the other way wastes the one piece of infrastructure that saves you the climb, and the descent on foot is the pleasant direction.
- The mountain has several gates far apart from each other, serving different sections — the garden area, the aviary valley and the summit are not a single walk. Pick your section and the matching gate before you set off, or you will spend the day on shuttle buses.
- Air quality decides everything. If you cannot see the Canton Tower clearly from the ground, the summit view will be white haze and you should do something else.
- Locals walk up before dawn and are coming down by eight. Going early gives you cool air, the best visibility of the day and a share in a genuine city ritual.
- There is a shuttle on the internal roads. If anyone in the group struggles on hills, use it rather than attempting the paths — the distances up there are larger than they look.
When to come
Early morning, especially October to December when the air is clearest and the heat is bearable. Avoid summer afternoons entirely.
Getting around
Better than most mountains and still hard work. The cable car gets you up without climbing, and the upper terraces, roads and some garden paths are paved and gently graded, so a wheelchair user can see real views using the cable car plus the internal shuttle. The walking trails, the summit rocks and much of the Mingchun Valley involve long flights of steps. A bad knee should use the cable car both ways rather than walking down.
Worth knowing before you go
Go on a clear day after rain - haze often hides the view that is the whole point.
