The story

What makes this place special

Beijing Road follows the traditional central axis of the old walled city, which is why what is under it matters more than what is on it. Excavation in 2002 exposed a stack of superimposed road surfaces in the middle of the street, reported as eleven layers running from the Tang dynasty through the Southern Han, Song and Yuan, the Ming and Qing, and into the Republican period, together with the foundations of the Gongbei Tower gatehouse. The pit, more than three metres deep and wide, was covered with toughened glass so the street could stay in use and the layers stay visible.

What you’ll discover

A busy pedestrian shopping street of chain stores, phone shops and snack stalls — ordinary, except for the glazed panels set into the paving about a hundred metres in from the Zhongshan Fifth Road end, where you look down through glass at layered sand, brick and tile from a thousand years of road building. There are interpretation boards beside the glass. The side lanes off the street hold older shophouses and better food than the street itself.

A little local insight

Good to know before you go

  • The ancient road pit is the only reason to come, and it is easy to walk straight over it. It is in the middle of the street near the north end; look down at the glass panels in the paving, not at the shopfronts.
  • Read the boards beside the glass. Without them it is a hole full of rubble; with them it is eleven centuries of resurfacing stacked up.
  • The food and the older architecture are in the lanes running off Beijing Road, not on it. The street itself is national chains.
  • Go in the evening when it is lit and busy, or early morning if you want to photograph the glass panels without people standing on them.
  • Combine with the Nanyue palace excavation site and the Sacred Heart Cathedral, both within fifteen minutes' walk — the three together make the old city's layers legible in a way none of them does alone.

When to come

Evening for atmosphere; early morning for a clear look at the excavation glass. Any time of year, since it is street level and shaded by buildings.

Getting around

Flat, paved, traffic-free and fully step-free from Gongyuanqian metro station — one of the easiest walks in central Guangzhou. The glass panels are flush with the paving and can be rolled over and looked down into from a seated position. Crowds in the evening are the only real obstacle.

Worth knowing before you go

The Millennium Ancient Road pit at the Zhongshan Fourth Road junction is open and free around the clock - best seen at night when it is lit.
