Guangdong Museum
广东省博物馆
A carved-box building in Zhujiang New Town covering Guangdong history, Chaozhou woodcarving, export porcelain and the natural history of the delta. The best single place to see what made this a trading province.

The story
What makes this place special
The provincial museum moved to Zhujiang New Town under a 2003 master plan for the district, relocating in 2004, and the new building opened in May 2010. It was designed by Rocco Design Architects, and its layered, hollowed form was derived from the traditional Cantonese carved ivory puzzle ball — concentric shells within shells. Inside, a four-storey atrium and a spiral stair link the levels.
What you’ll discover
A black box on stilts in the middle of the new business district, across the axis from the opera house and the library. Inside, the permanent displays divide into Guangdong history, natural history, and regional decorative art, the last of which is the strongest: Chaozhou woodcarving, Duan inkstones, export porcelain and ivory work made for the Canton trade. Temporary exhibitions change often and are usually the busiest part of the building. The atrium and the stair are themselves worth walking.
A little local insight
Good to know before you go
- Go for the decorative arts floor, not the history floor. The Chaozhou gilded woodcarving and the Canton export wares are world-class and explain what the city actually did for three hundred years; the history galleries are conventional.
- Entry is free but by ID registration and the daily allocation can run out at peak times — bring your passport and go in the morning.
- It is a ten-minute walk across the axis from the Canton Tower on the other bank, so a hazy day is well spent here and a clear one on the tower.
- The building is large and cold. Two to three hours, and bring a layer in summer; the air conditioning is set for the collections.
- The natural history section is aimed at children and can be skipped by adults short of time.
When to come
Weekday mornings. Closed one day a week, usually Monday, so check before crossing the city. Any hot or rainy day is a good day for it.
Getting around
Excellent. New building, step-free approach from the plaza and the metro, lifts to all floors, wide level galleries, accessible toilets and seating throughout. Among the easiest major museums in southern China for a wheelchair user or anyone who tires quickly.
Worth knowing before you go
Foreign passports sometimes fail the mini-program form; the visitor desk can register you on the spot if you bring the passport.
