Impression Sanjie Liu
印象刘三姐
Zhang Yimou's open-air night spectacle, staged on the Li River itself with twelve karst peaks as the backdrop and a cast of several hundred local fishermen and Zhuang villagers. It was China's first large-scale landscape performance and still the best.

The story
What makes this place special
Impression Sanjie Liu was the first of China's large-scale outdoor landscape spectaculars, directed by Zhang Yimou with Wang Chaoge and Fan Yue and running since the mid-2000s. It draws on the story of Liu Sanjie, the Zhuang folk singer of Guangxi legend, and on the 1960s film made from it. Its significance is that it created the whole genre - the Impression and Qiangu Qing shows now staged all over China are imitations of this format, which uses real landscape instead of a built set.
What you’ll discover
The stage is roughly two square kilometres of the Li River at its confluence with the Tianjia stream, with Shutong Hill opposite and twelve karst peaks as the backdrop, lit after dark. The auditorium is cut into the bank in terraces shaped like rice paddies, giving a 180-degree view across the water. Over about seventy minutes several hundred performers - many of them local farmers and fishermen rather than professionals - work on and in the river with bamboo rafts, fishing lights, red cloth and massed choral singing, with the peaks floodlit behind.
A little local insight
Good to know before you go
- Sit high and central. The show is spread across two kilometres of water and the composition only works from above; local advice is to be above about row 14, and you can ask for a higher row when buying. A cheap low seat looks at the back of other people's heads and sees a fraction of the picture.
- There are usually two performances a night in the main season and the later one is generally less full. Arrive thirty to forty minutes before curtain - the walk from the car park and the entry gates is slow with a few thousand people.
- It is open-air over water and it goes ahead in rain, when free disposable ponchos are handed out, but is cancelled in bad weather. Check on the day and understand the refund terms before you book a tight itinerary around it.
- Do not buy from touts outside. Street sellers offering heavily discounted tickets are a long-standing problem here and the seat you get does not match what was described. Book through the venue or an established platform.
- If you are choosing between this and the other Guilin shows, this is the original and the one with the real landscape; the indoor productions have more technology and less river.
When to come
Evening, obviously - and the warmer months, because you sit outdoors beside water for over an hour. April to October is the main season; winter performances are cold and schedules thin out. Avoid the National Day week unless you have booked a good seat well ahead.
Getting around
Mixed. The auditorium is a terraced hillside bowl, so reaching an upper row - which is where you need to be for the view - means climbing stepped aisles with no lift. Lower rows are reachable more easily and venue staff can usually seat a wheelchair user at an accessible level, but that is also the worst viewing position. The approach from the car park is a long level walk. Worth phoning ahead: accessible seating exists but is not in the good rows.
Worth knowing before you go
Mid-range seats are the sweet spot: the stage is 2 km wide, so the cheapest seats are too far to read the choreography and the most expensive add little. Take a rain poncho - the show runs in light rain.
