Xiaohe Direct Street

小河直街

A short restored canal street of whitewashed, dark-tiled Jiangnan houses where more than half the original residents still live. Far smaller and far less commercial than Hefang Street, which is exactly why locals send you here.

The story

What makes this place special

Xiaohe Direct Street is a canal-side street about a kilometre north of Gongchen Bridge, at the junction of the Grand Canal with the Xiaohe and Yuhang waterways. It was a working boatmen's and dockers' quarter - housing, chandlers, small shops and warehouses serving canal traffic - and the surviving buildings are mostly late Qing and Republican, with the ground floors opening to the street as shops and the upper floors lived in. The neighbouring Xiaohe oil depot, one of Hangzhou's old industrial sites, closed in 2019 and has been converted into Xiaohe Park. The street was restored as a conservation project rather than rebuilt.

What you’ll discover

A narrow street between two- and three-storey timber-fronted houses with black tiles and whitewash, right on the canal bank, with the water on one side and lanes running back on the other. The character is residential: people still live here, with laundry out and old shopfronts, and the commercial side is coffee shops, craft workshops and tea houses rather than souvenir stalls. Xiaohe Park at the end, on the old oil depot site, keeps some of the industrial structures in a new landscape.

A little local insight

Good to know before you go

  • This is the quiet one. Compared with Qiaoxi and with Hangzhou's other restored streets, Xiaohe is small, lived-in and barely visited, and that is the reason to come.
  • Walk it as part of the canal, not on its own: water bus or walk from Gongchen Bridge and the Qiaoxi museums, about a kilometre along the bank.
  • Late afternoon and early evening is when the street is at its most alive, with residents out and the coffee shops open; it is close to dead in the middle of a weekday morning.
  • The converted oil depot park at the end is an interesting piece of industrial reuse and most visitors who come for the old street never walk on to it.
  • There is little to buy and no ticket - come for an hour's walk and a coffee, not for sights.

When to come

Late afternoon or early evening, and better on a weekday. Spring and autumn; the street is narrow and shaded, which helps in summer.

Getting around

Good. The street is flat and the canal promenade is paved, with no steps along its length, so a wheelchair can use it; the surface is old stone and uneven in places and the street is narrow. Shop thresholds have lips. Crossing the canal requires a road bridge or the water bus, as the pedestrian crossings are stepped.

Worth knowing before you go

It is residential, so keep the noise down and do not photograph into doorways. Combine with Qiaoxi across the canal in a single afternoon.
