A taste of Harbin

Tadaosi

塔道斯西餐厅

A Central Avenue Russian restaurant with a Lithuanian-Russian lineage and a cellar-like dining room hung with old Harbin photographs. It sits in the same cluster as Huamei and draws the same crowds; reviews are more mixed than the queue length suggests, so go for the setting and order conservatively.

Why come here

A place worth making time for

Listed on Ctrip's Harbin must-visit restaurant ranking (No. 3 at the time of checking) and a long-standing Central Avenue name; no culinary award.

The house favourites

What to order

Point at the Chinese. Staff will understand it even where the menu has no English at all.

  • Clay-pot braised beef (罐焖牛肉)
  • Moscow salad (莫斯科沙拉)
  • Red sausage (红肠)
  • Russian fried bread (俄式面包)

What it actually tastes like

Sweet-leaning Russian-Chinese cooking with a lot of cream and tomato. The red sausage has a strong smoked-garlic funk.

Allergens in this kitchen

dairygluten/wheategg

This is the kitchen, not one dish. Woks, fryers, blanching water and utensils are shared in almost every Chinese restaurant, so for a serious allergy treat the whole premises as the unit rather than ordering around it.
