The story

What makes this place special

The Grand Theatre opened in 2015 on Harbin's Cultural Island in the Songhua River wetlands north of the city, designed by the Beijing practice MAD Architects. Its white aluminium-and-glass skin is shaped to read as a wind-carved snowdrift, and it won international architecture awards soon after opening. It is a working opera house with two auditoria, and Harbin's claim to it rests on the city's long Russian-inherited classical music tradition - the Harbin Summer Music Festival dates back to 1961.

What you’ll discover

From outside, a low white curved mass sitting in marshland, with a public ramp that spirals up over the roof to a viewing platform - this is open without a performance ticket and is the main draw for most visitors. Inside, the larger hall is lined in Manchurian ash and the lobby is a tall curving space under a glazed slot. Unless you have a concert ticket or a tour, the interior is limited to the lobby.

A little local insight

Good to know before you go

  • The rooftop walk is the attraction and it is separate from attending a performance. Do that even if you are not seeing a show.
  • It is a long way out in the wetlands with little around it. Go by taxi or ride-hail and book the return; there is no easy onward connection and almost no shelter if you are waiting.
  • Late afternoon gives you the building in warm light and the wetlands behind it; the white skin is flat and glaring at midday.
  • If a concert is on while you are in town, buy a ticket for the interior - it is the only way to see the ash-lined main hall, and the acoustics are the reason the building was built.
  • In winter the exposed roof ramp is icy and the wind off the river is brutal; this is a summer and autumn building for anyone not determined.

When to come

Late afternoon into sunset, May to October. In winter the roof walk may be closed or dangerous and the surrounding wetland is blank snow.

Getting around

The exterior ramp is a continuous gentle slope rather than stairs, which was a deliberate design choice, and in dry weather a wheelchair can be pushed up it - but it is long, exposed and unshaded, and the gradient adds up. The auditoria and lobby have lifts and designated wheelchair positions. A bad knee manages the ramp slowly; there is no handrail on the whole length and the surface is slick when wet or frozen.

Worth knowing before you go

Pay for the viewing-deck package: the exterior roof walk and the upper terrace are the whole point, and the wetland boardwalk views are best in late afternoon.
