Discover Harbin
Harbin Polarland
哈尔滨极地公园
A polar-themed aquarium whose beluga whale and white-whale shows are among the best-known in China, plus penguins and seals across five indoor halls. Mainly a wet-weather or deep-winter option when outdoor sightseeing becomes punishing.
The story
What makes this place special
Polarland is a commercial polar-themed aquarium on Sun Island, built around cold-water species - beluga whales, walruses, polar bears, penguins and seals - and best known domestically for a beluga performance. It is a modern attraction with no historical content, and it exists largely as a wet-weather and small-children alternative to the outdoor festival sites.
What you’ll discover
An indoor circuit of tanks and viewing windows with scheduled shows: a beluga routine in a large tank, a sea lion or walrus performance, and penguin and polar bear enclosures. The route is one-way through heated halls, with the shows timed so you move from one arena to the next. Allow two to three hours including waiting for shows.
A little local insight
Good to know before you go
- The whole point for most visitors is a single beluga show, and the halls fill well before it starts. Check the show board at the entrance and work the rest of the route around those times rather than walking the circuit in order.
- This is the warm-day-off attraction. If your group includes children who have had one cold night at the ice park, this is where to spend the following afternoon.
- It is on Sun Island on the north bank, so it combines naturally with the snow sculptures and the tiger park - not with anything in the old city.
- Weekday afternoons outside Chinese school holidays are dramatically quieter; during Spring Festival the viewing windows are three deep.
- Animal welfare standards here are not Western ones, and the performances are trained-animal shows. Decide in advance whether that is acceptable to you.
When to come
Any time of year, since it is indoors; a weekday afternoon in the ice festival season, when everyone else is outdoors, is the quietest.
Getting around
Fully indoors, heated, with lifts and ramps between levels and flat viewing galleries, which makes it the most wheelchair-friendly attraction in Harbin and an obvious choice for anyone who cannot manage cold or uneven ground. The show arenas have stepped seating, so a chair uses the designated flat area at the front or back - arrive early for those spots.
Worth knowing before you go
Show times are posted at the entrance and the beluga performance is the reason most people come - check the board on arrival and plan the halls around it rather than wandering in blind.
