Siberian Tiger Park

东北虎林园

A 144-hectare breeding reserve north of the city holding well over a thousand Amur tigers, toured from inside a caged bus that drives through the open enclosures. Confronting in places, but it is the easiest place on earth to see this subspecies at close range.

From ¥90 basic entry; ¥125 adult / ¥85 child for the ticket plus the close-range safari bus≈ US$13–192 hoursPassport needed

The story

What makes this place special

The park on the Songbei bank, next to Sun Island, is a breeding centre for the Amur (Siberian) tiger run under the Heilongjiang breeding programme, and it holds several hundred animals across adult and juvenile enclosures plus a small education hall. It presents itself as conservation work, and the breeding record is real, but the visitor experience is a drive-through enclosure with live feeding sold as an add-on, which many foreign visitors find uncomfortable.

What you’ll discover

You board a caged minibus that drives slowly through a series of fenced compounds while tigers - and in some sections lions and ligers - approach the vehicle. There are walkways over some enclosures and a juvenile area where younger animals are kept closer. Live chickens and strips of meat are sold to be fed to the animals from the bus. The whole visit is about an hour.

A little local insight

Good to know before you go

  • Know what you are buying before you go. Live animals are sold for feeding and tigers are baited towards the bus; if that is not something you want to fund or watch, skip this entirely - there is no version of the visit that avoids it.
  • Sit on the left side of the bus going in: the enclosure fences and feeding points are mostly on that side.
  • It is next door to Sun Island on the north bank, so pair the two and cross the river once.
  • Winter is when the tigers are active and their coats are thick; in summer heat they lie flat in shade and you see very little.
  • The walkway sections let you watch without the bus and without the feeding, and they are where the better photographs are.

When to come

Winter, late morning. Cold weather makes the animals move; summer afternoons are close to pointless.

Getting around

Most of the visit is seated on a bus, which makes it one of the easier Harbin attractions for a bad knee. Boarding the bus involves steep steps and no lift, so a wheelchair user needs to be able to transfer with help; the chair goes in the luggage space. The elevated walkway sections are reached by stairs and are not wheelchair-accessible.

Worth knowing before you go

Live-prey feeding is sold as an add-on and you can simply decline it. Do not confuse this with the separate Siberian Tiger Park at Hengdaohezi near Mudanjiang, which shares the Chinese name and appears in the same search results.
