Discover Harbin

Songhua River waterfront and cross-river cable car

松花江畔与松花江观光索道

The river at the foot of Central Street is the city's promenade: open water and boats in summer, and from roughly January a frozen surface that locals cross on foot, sled and ice bike. A 1,156-metre cable car runs over it from Tongjiang Square to Sun Island.

Riverfront free. Cable car ¥58 adult one way / ¥96 return; ¥30 child one way / ¥50 return. A passenger ferry across is a couple of yuan in summer≈ US$4.47–141 hour, or longer if you play on the ice

The story

What makes this place special

The Songhua River is the reason Harbin exists: the Chinese Eastern Railway crossed it here, and the city grew on the south bank. The embankment at the foot of Central Street is marked by the Flood Control Monument, raised in 1958 to commemorate the city's defence against the 1957 flood, with later high-water marks cut into it, including 1998. The cable car across the river to Sun Island was built to link the old city to the north-bank parks and runs year-round.

What you’ll discover

At the north end of Central Street you come out at the monument and Stalin Park, a long riverside strip of paths and trees. In winter the river freezes solid and the ice becomes a public space - people walk out onto it, ride horse carts and sledges, and cut ice blocks for the festivals. The cable car runs from the south bank over the frozen or open river to Sun Island in about ten minutes, and is the most interesting way to cross.

A little local insight

Good to know before you go

  • Take the cable car over and a taxi or the bus back, rather than return. One crossing gives you the view; the second is time you could spend on the island.
  • Walking onto the frozen river is free and is one of the genuinely unusual things you can do in Harbin. Stay where other people are and off any patch of dark or cleared ice.
  • The high-water marks carved into the Flood Control Monument are easy to miss and are the most interesting thing on the embankment - the 1998 line is above head height.
  • In summer this is where Harbin cools off in the evening: swimmers, boats and food stalls along the bank. It is a completely different place from the winter version.
  • Avoid crossing by cable car in high wind or heavy snow; service stops without much notice and you can be stranded on the wrong bank.

When to come

Late afternoon in winter, when the ice activity is at its busiest and you cross as the city lights come on. Summer evenings for the opposite reason - the riverbank is the city's social space.

Getting around

The embankment and Stalin Park are flat and paved and work well for a wheelchair in summer. The cable car stations involve stairs and the cabins are boarded while moving slowly, so a wheelchair user needs to transfer with help and a bad knee needs a confident step-in; staff can slow the cabins. Walking out onto the river ice means crossing a sloped, uneven, slippery bank and is not realistic with a chair or an unstable knee.

Worth knowing before you go

In deep winter you can simply walk out onto the river - but stay on the marked and trodden routes near the monument, and give any machinery or snowmobile track a wide berth. Early and late in the season the ice is not uniformly safe.
