A taste of Inner Mongolia

Chen's Chatang

陈记茶汤

A tiny Hohhot institution selling chatang, a millet-flour gruel poured from a huge polished brass urn and whisked with sugar and sesame. It is a snack rather than a meal and takes ten minutes, but it is the kind of local thing a visitor otherwise walks straight past, and the pour from the urn is a small piece of street theatre.

What to order

Point at the Chinese. Staff will understand it even where the menu has no English at all.

  • Millet chatang from the brass urn (茶汤)
  • Sesame and sugar topping (芝麻糖)

What it actually tastes like

Thick, sweet and sandy-textured; the closest Western comparison is a very dense semolina pudding, drunk from a bowl.

Allergens in this kitchen

sesamegluten/wheatpeanut

This is the kitchen, not one dish. Woks, fryers, blanching water and utensils are shared in almost every Chinese restaurant, so for a serious allergy treat the whole premises as the unit rather than ordering around it.
