Guandu Ancient Town
官渡古镇
A restored 1,000-year-old settlement now swallowed by suburban Kunming, built around the Jingang Pagoda — a rare Indian-style diamond-throne stupa of carved stone. Free, compact and full of snack stalls, it is the easiest old-town fix inside the city.

The story
What makes this place special
Guandu, now swallowed by Kunming's southeastern suburbs, was a lakeside town on Dianchi before the shore retreated. Its important building is the Vajra Pagoda of Miaozhan Temple, a diamond-throne pagoda built outside the temple gate by Luo Gui, the eunuch garrison commander of Yunnan, in 1458 under the Ming Tianshun reign; some sources give 1457. It carries five stupas on a sandstone platform, the central one 16.05m high, with four corner stupas representing the Buddhas of the five directions, and two brick close-eaved pagodas were built inside the temple gate at the same time. It was repaired in 1696 and again in 1982, and was listed in the fourth national batch of protected monuments in 1996. Its foundation sits on snail-shell fill over mud and the whole structure had been sinking; on 24 June 2002 it was lifted bodily 2.6m using pipe-jacking and prestressed concrete techniques. Most of the surrounding old town was rebuilt in the 2000s.
What you’ll discover
A flagstoned square with the stone pagoda standing alone in the middle of it, which is the genuine article and worth a close look at the carved stupa drums and the Sanskrit inscriptions. Around it are reconstructed lanes of grey brick and tile with temples, a Confucian hall, snack shops and tea houses, plus an active Buddhist monastery at the back where monks live and chant. The town is a Kunming weekend destination rather than a foreign-tourist one.
A little local insight
Good to know before you go
- Treat the pagoda as the sight and the town as the setting. Ninety per cent of the surrounding fabric is twenty-first century reconstruction; the pagoda, the two brick pagodas and parts of the temples are not.
- The pagoda was jacked up 2.6m in 2002 because it was sinking into lake mud, which is why it stands higher than the square around it. The step at its base is the measure of how far it had gone down.
- This is the best place near Kunming for local snacks rather than restaurant food: Guandu baba flatbread, rice noodles and bean jelly, sold from shopfronts on the lanes, with Kunming families queuing.
- Come in the late afternoon or on a weekend evening, when the square fills with locals dancing and the temple is lit. Weekday mornings it is empty and the shops are shut.
- It is a short ride from the Yunnan Provincial Museum and on the metro, so the two combine into one straightforward half day away from the city centre.
When to come
Late afternoon into evening, especially at the weekend, for the square at its liveliest. Any season; it is flat and shaded and copes with rain.
Getting around
Good. The square and main lanes are flat, broad flagstone, so a wheelchair can move freely and a bad knee has no problem. The pagoda is viewed from ground level and does not need to be climbed. Temple halls have raised sills and a step or two.
Worth knowing before you go
This is the place to try Guandu baba (a stuffed griddle cake) and other Yunnan street snacks cheaply; combine it with the Yunnan Provincial Museum, which is a short ride away in the same district.
