A taste of Lijiang

Xiangshan Market cured-rib hotpot street

象山市场腊排骨一条街

A run of competing cured-rib hotpot shops beside Xiangshan market in Lijiang's new town, which is where locals go for this dish rather than the old town. The shops here tend to close in the early afternoon, and the one usually described as busiest with locals is Yujie (钰洁). Pricing is transparent in a way the old town's is not: one price for the pot, then a flat few yuan per plate of added vegetables.

Why come here

A place worth making time for

No award. It is the local consensus answer to 'where do you actually eat cured-rib hotpot', reported in Chinese travel writing on Lijiang.

The house favourites

What to order

Point at the Chinese. Staff will understand it even where the menu has no English at all.

  • Cured pork rib hotpot (腊排骨火锅)
  • Added plates: potato, tofu skin, mint, wild greens (配菜:土豆、豆皮、薄荷、野菜)

What it actually tastes like

Mint goes into the pot here, which is a Yunnan habit that surprises people. The broth is salty and the meat is on the bone.

Allergens in this kitchen

soygluten/wheat

This is the kitchen, not one dish. Woks, fryers, blanching water and utensils are shared in almost every Chinese restaurant, so for a serious allergy treat the whole premises as the unit rather than ordering around it.
