Lijiang

Naxi old town below a snow mountain

A UNESCO old town at 2,400 m, and the usual base for Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and Tiger Leaping Gorge. The old town has no gate but does have a maintenance fee.

3–5 daysTime to explore
12 placesFind your favourites

Getting there

Lijiang Sanyi (LJG), or high-speed rail from Kunming and Dali. Come up through Dali rather than flying straight in if you are heading on to Shangri-La.

When to go

March to May and September to November.

How long: 3–5 days

Give it 3 days for the headline sights, or up to 5 to see it properly and eat your way around.

Three covers the old town and Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. Five adds Shuhe and Baisha, Tiger Leaping Gorge, and the Naxi villages — and gives you a day at altitude before the mountain.

Yunnan: Dali, Lijiang and Shangri-La, in the right order

The most rewarding slow travel in China, and the one region where altitude order matters: go up gradually, and the mountains are a pleasure rather than a headache.

What to see in Lijiang

Researched largely from Chinese-language sources, so it goes beyond the usual shortlist. Dollar figures are approximate, at the rate on 2026-10-08.

Lijiang Old Town (Dayan) (丽江古城(大研古城)), Lijiang
chensiyuan · CC BY-SA 4.0

丽江古城(大研古城)

A UNESCO-listed Naxi town of cobbled lanes, spring-fed water channels and tiled roofs below Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, laid out with no city wall and no grid. It is touristy by day and genuinely beautiful at dawn, and it is the base almost every Lijiang trip is built around.

Tickets & prices

Free to walk the lanes, but a ¥50 per-person Ancient Town Maintenance Fee applies; since 1 Aug 2025 one payment is valid for 365 days with unlimited re-entry

黑龙潭公园(玉泉公园)

A spring-fed pool at the north edge of the old town whose Deyue Pavilion and arched bridge frame the most reproduced view in Yunnan: temple roofs with Jade Dragon Snow Mountain reflected behind them. It is also where Lijiang locals do tai chi and sing at dawn.

Tickets & prices

Free, but entry requires a valid Lijiang Ancient Town Maintenance Fee receipt (¥50, 365 days)

玉龙雪山

A 5,596 m glaciated massif 25 km north of Lijiang, sacred to the Naxi and never successfully summited. The cable cars put you on a boardwalk at 4,506-4,680 m, which is the easiest high-altitude glacier view anywhere in China.

Tickets & prices

¥100 park entry plus a compulsory ¥20 eco-shuttle; cable cars extra — Glacier Park big cableway ¥140, Yak Meadow middle cableway ¥65, Spruce Meadow small cableway ¥60

Shuhe Old Town (束河古镇), Lijiang
Gisling · CC BY 3.0

束河古镇

An older, quieter Naxi settlement 5 km north of Dayan that was a staging post on the Tea Horse Road. Same canals and cobbles as the main old town but a fraction of the crowds, and the Tea Horse Road Museum here is a genuinely good primer on the caravan trade.

Tickets & prices

Free — the former ¥30 gate ticket has been abolished; Shuhe falls inside the ¥50 Ancient Town Maintenance Fee zone

≈ US$4.47–7.45

白沙古镇与白沙壁画

The original Naxi capital before Dayan, now a single dusty street of workshops under Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. Its 45 surviving Ming and Qing murals in Dabaoji Palace blend Tibetan Buddhist, Han Daoist and Naxi Dongba imagery in a way found nowhere else in China.

Tickets & prices

Village free; the murals complex (Dabaoji Palace, Liuli Hall, Dading Pavilion) charges a separate ticket — Chinese listings give figures from 10 to ¥30, so confirm at the gate

木府

The restored seat of the Mu chieftains who ruled Lijiang for the Ming and Qing courts for over 400 years, built in deliberate imitation of the Forbidden City but using Naxi carpentry. It is the one place in the old town that explains how Lijiang was actually governed.

Tickets & prices

Tiger Leaping Gorge (虎跳峡), Lijiang
kung.jon · CC BY-SA 3.0

虎跳峡

One of the deepest river canyons on earth, where the Jinsha (upper Yangtze) narrows between two 5,000 m ranges. Day visitors walk the boardwalks at Upper Gorge; the two-day High Trail above it is the best-known trek in southwest China.

Tickets & prices

Around ¥65 for the scenic-area ticket (Chinese sources report figures between 45 and ¥80 across sections and seasons); some sections charge small separate village tolls

Three separate cableways climb different flanks of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, and choosing between them decides what your day looks like. The big one reaches the glacier boardwalk at 4,506 m; the other two land on alpine meadows around 3,200-3,700 m with far easier breathing.

Tickets & prices

Glacier Park big cableway ¥140; Yak Meadow middle cableway ¥65; Spruce Meadow small cableway ¥60 — all on top of the ¥100 park ticket and ¥20 eco-shuttle

What to eat in Lijiang

If you only eat one thing, make it a clay pot of cured-pork-rib hotpot (la paigu huoguo) shared between two or more people, with a plate of fried chickpea jelly on the side. If you are alone or in a hurry, a Lijiang baba flatbread from a street griddle plus a bowl of Naxi stir-fried rice noodles will fill you for under 30 CNY.

Allergens that turn up across Lijiang cooking: egg, fish, gluten/wheat, sesame, soy, tree nuts. Recipes vary shop to shop, so treat every listing below as a starting point for a conversation rather than a clearance — and carry the dietary cards, which name the things that actually catch people out.

Cured Pork Rib Hotpot

腊排骨火锅

là páigǔ huǒguō

Pork ribs that have been salted and air-dried in Lijiang's cold dry winter air, then simmered for hours into a clear bone broth that becomes a table hotpot. You add potatoes, mint, greens and tofu to the pot as you eat.

Tastes like: Deeply savoury and salty-meaty rather than spicy, with a clean soup and meat that falls off the bone; the dipping sauce beside it carries the chilli.

mildsoy

Not on the menu but in it: Pork throughout — the broth itself is pork bone, so there is no way to make this halal or vegetarian; dipping sauces usually contain soy sauce and sometimes fermented bean paste.

Might not be for you: The ribs are served bone-in and must be gnawed; the cured meat has a pronounced aged, almost ham-like funk that reads as 'old' to some first-timers.

Where to eat it

Where: Xiangshan Market (象山市场) north of the Old Town is the local cluster of rib-hotpot specialists; Old Town restaurants charge roughly double.

Fried Chickpea Jelly

鸡豆凉粉

jī dòu liáng fěn

A grey-brown jelly set from local 'chicken bean' (a small highland chickpea) flour, cut into slabs and either served cold in a vinegar-chilli dressing or pan-fried until crisp outside and molten inside.

Tastes like: Mild, faintly nutty and bean-like on its own; the flavour comes from the sour-savoury-chilli dressing poured over it.

mildVeggie version sometimessoysesame

Not on the menu but in it: The dressing often contains soy sauce and sometimes a spoon of pork-based chilli oil at meat-eating stalls; ask if this matters to you.

Might not be for you: The cold version has a slippery, wobbly texture that some Western eaters find odd; the grey colour puts people off before they taste it.

Where to eat it

Where: Street stalls all through Dayan Old Town and Shuhe; about 8-10 CNY a plate.

Watch videos of Fried Chickpea Jelly →

Lijiang Baba Flatbread

丽江粑粑

lìjiāng bābā

A thick, layered wheat flatbread the size of a side plate, griddled slowly in a flat pan. It comes savoury (with ham or spring onion) or sweet (with sugar, sesame and walnut).

Tastes like: Rich and buttery-flaky, like a dense pastry; the savoury version is salty and hammy, the sweet one is sugary and nutty.

gluten/wheatsesametree nuts

Not on the menu but in it: Traditionally made with rendered pork lard (化油) in the dough — this applies to the sweet version too, which catches out vegetarians and halal eaters.

Might not be for you: Very greasy by Western breakfast standards; the savoury one is extremely salty.

Where to eat it

Where: Griddle stalls on Sifang Street and throughout the Old Town lanes.

Watch videos of Lijiang Baba Flatbread →

Naxi Blood-and-Rice Sausage

米灌肠

mǐ guàn cháng

Pig's blood mixed with cooked rice and local spices, stuffed into cleaned pig intestine, then sliced into coins and either steamed or shallow-fried.

Tastes like: Savoury, iron-rich and mildly spiced; the fried version is crisp-edged and soft in the middle.

mild

Not on the menu but in it: Pig's blood and pork intestine are the dish, not a garnish; usually fried in pork fat.

Might not be for you: Blood sausage plus intestine casing is a double hurdle for many visitors — the metallic blood note is unmistakable.

Where: Naxi home-style restaurants and the Xiangshan Market food stalls.

Watch videos of Naxi Blood-and-Rice Sausage →

Blown Pig's Liver

吹猪肝

chuī zhūgān

A Naxi banquet cold dish: pig's liver is inflated with a spiced marinade, air-dried over a fire, then sliced paper-thin and dressed with chilli, vinegar and coriander.

Tastes like: Intensely savoury and mineral, sharpened by sour-spicy dressing; dense and slightly chewy.

mildsoy

Not on the menu but in it: It is pork offal start to finish; the marinade typically includes liquor and soy.

Might not be for you: Strong offal flavour and a cured, almost gamey smell. This is probably the hardest Naxi dish for a Western palate.

Where: Naxi courtyard restaurants that serve the traditional 'Three Layers of Water' (三叠水) banquet.

Watch videos of Blown Pig's Liver →

Black Goat Hotpot

黑山羊火锅

hēi shānyáng huǒguō

Highland black goat, bone and all, slow-cooked in its own broth with ginger and local herbs and brought to the table as a bubbling hotpot.

Tastes like: Rich, gamey and warming, with a strong goat aroma; the broth is unctuous rather than spicy.

mildsoy

Not on the menu but in it: Usually just goat, but dipping sauces contain soy and sometimes fermented tofu. Not automatically halal — the slaughter is not certified.

Might not be for you: Pronounced goat smell, lots of bone and skin-on fatty cuts, and offal is often included in the pot by default.

Where to eat it

Where: Goat hotpot restaurants in the New Town (新城), where locals eat it; it is a cold-weather dish.

Lijiang Trout Three Ways

丽江三文鱼一鱼三吃

lìjiāng sānwényú yī yú sān chī

Farmed highland rainbow trout — confusingly called 'salmon' locally — served as sashimi, with the skin deep-fried for dipping in pepper-salt, and the head and bones made into a soup or hotpot.

Tastes like: Clean and faintly sweet raw; the fried skin is crisp and salty; the bone soup is milky and mild.

mildfishsoy

Not on the menu but in it: Dipping sauce is soy-and-wasabi based; the hotpot broth may be started with chicken or pork stock.

Might not be for you: It is raw freshwater fish from a landlocked highland farm — a genuine food-safety judgement call, and cooked preparations are the safer order.

Where: Trout specialists in Shuhe Old Town and on the road toward Lashihai; sold by weight.

Watch videos of Lijiang Trout Three Ways →

Naxi Stir-fried Rice Noodles

纳西炒饵块 / 炒米线

nàxī chǎo ěrkuài / chǎo mǐxiàn

Flat rice cake slices (erkuai) or round rice noodles stir-fried hard in a wok with ham, egg, pickled greens and chilli.

Tastes like: Savoury, smoky from the wok, with a sour kick from the pickles and a chewy bite.

mildVeggie version sometimeseggsoy

Not on the menu but in it: Almost always cooked with Yunnan cured ham (pork) and in lard; even the 'vegetable' version often gets a spoonful of pork fat.

Might not be for you: Nothing difficult — this is the safe, reliable order when the rest of the menu looks intimidating.

Where: Any small noodle shop in the Old Town or New Town; 12-20 CNY.

Watch videos of Naxi Stir-fried Rice Noodles →

Yunnan Wild Mushroom Hotpot

野生菌火锅

yěshēng jùn huǒguō

A seasonal (roughly June to September) pot of chicken broth loaded with foraged highland mushrooms — porcini, chanterelle, matsutake and many with no English name.

Tastes like: Earthy, deeply umami and aromatic; the broth gets better the longer it cooks.

Not on the menu but in it: The base is chicken or pork bone stock, often with cured ham slices, so it is not vegetarian despite looking like a vegetable dish.

Might not be for you: Staff will insist on a strict boiling time before you eat — undercooked wild mushrooms genuinely cause hallucinations and hospital visits in Yunnan every summer. Follow their timer.

Where to eat it

Where: Mushroom hotpot restaurants in the New Town during mushroom season; prices rise steeply for matsutake.

Check these before you go out of your way. Restaurants close, move and drop off lists, and these were last checked 2026-10-08. The durable skill is finding current recommendations yourself:
  • Dianping (大众点评) — the real ratings. Chinese only, but photos, prices and a 4.5+ score survive translation. Its 必吃榜 "Must-Eat" list is the mainstream benchmark.
  • Black Pearl (黑珍珠) — China's own fine-dining guide, published annually by Meituan and taken more seriously domestically than Michelin.
  • Michelin covers only a few Chinese cities, so its absence means nothing outside them.
  • Xiaohongshu (小红书) — what is actually busy this month, rather than this year.

¥50–70 per person for a shared pot≈ US$7.45

The shops here tend to close in the early afternoon, and the one usually described as busiest with locals is Yujie (钰洁). Pricing is transparent in a way the old town's is not: one price for the pot, then a flat few yuan per plate of added vegetables.
