Jade Dragon Cable Cars (Glacier Park, Spruce Meadow, Yak Meadow)

玉龙雪山索道(大索道、小索道、中索道)

Three separate cableways climb different flanks of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, and choosing between them decides what your day looks like. The big one reaches the glacier boardwalk at 4,506 m; the other two land on alpine meadows around 3,200-3,700 m with far easier breathing.

Glacier Park big cableway ¥140; Yak Meadow middle cableway ¥65; Spruce Meadow small cableway ¥60 — all on top of the ¥100 park ticket and ¥20 eco-shuttle≈ US$2.98–212-3 hours per cablewayPassport needed

The story

What makes this place special

Three separate cableways serve different parts of the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain scenic area, and they are not alternatives to one another. The Glacier Park cableway, the large one, climbs from a lower station near Ganhaizi to a platform at 4,506m directly below the summit of Shanzidou, with a boardwalk continuing to about 4,680m. The Spruce Meadow cableway, the small one, reaches an alpine meadow at roughly 3,240-3,250m, the place Naxi tradition treats as the meadow of the dead. The Yak Meadow cableway, the middle one, reaches high pasture on the mountain's northeast side; reported elevations for its top station vary between about 3,600m and 3,800m.

What you’ll discover

Glacier Park is a short, steep gondola over bare rock to a cold, windy platform of steel decking under the ice face, then a staircase boardwalk up the moraine. Spruce Meadow is a gentle ride into forest, ending in a flat grass clearing ringed by spruce with the summit above it, reached by a level boardwalk from the top station. Yak Meadow is the long, empty one: rolling pasture with grazing yaks, prayer flags, a small temple and far fewer people, with a walking loop of an hour or more across open ground.

A little local insight

Good to know before you go

  • Pick one and treat the others as optional. Doing two in a day means a lot of shuttle-bus waiting inside the park and, if one of them is Glacier Park, a bad altitude plan.
  • If the summit is in cloud, Glacier Park is money spent on fog. Spruce Meadow and Yak Meadow are worth doing in flat light; the big cableway is not.
  • Glacier Park tickets are capped and timed, and they sell out days ahead in July, August and the early-October holiday. The other two rarely do.
  • Yak Meadow is the one experienced visitors choose. Large tour groups skip it, the walking is on the level and the view of the mountain from across open pasture is better than from directly beneath it.
  • Check operating status on the day. The upper cableways stop for high wind, ice and maintenance, and closures of weeks at a time for refurbishment have been reported for the Yak Meadow line.
  • The lower stations are cold and exposed even in summer. Rent or buy a padded coat in Lijiang town, where it costs much less than at the gate.

When to come

First ride of the morning, October to April, for clear air and a visible summit. Cloud usually closes in on the peak by late morning, and the summer rains can hide it for days.

Getting around

The cable cabins themselves are boarded on the level and a wheelchair can ride. Spruce Meadow is the best choice: its top station boardwalk is flat and short. Yak Meadow is open pasture with rough tracks, feasible for a bad knee but hard going in a wheelchair. Glacier Park is step-free only as far as the 4,506m platform; everything above it is stairs at extreme altitude. Sedan chairs are available on the Glacier Park boardwalk for a negotiated fee.

Worth knowing before you go

If you have been at altitude less than 48 hours, take Yak Meadow or Spruce Meadow instead of the glacier — people are stretchered off the 4,500 m boardwalk every week, and the refund rules do not cover altitude sickness.
