Shuhe Old Town
束河古镇
An older, quieter Naxi settlement 5 km north of Dayan that was a staging post on the Tea Horse Road. Same canals and cobbles as the main old town but a fraction of the crowds, and the Tea Horse Road Museum here is a genuinely good primer on the caravan trade.
The story
What makes this place special
Shuhe is a Naxi village about 5km northwest of Dayan, on the older caravan route north, and it was historically the leather and hide trade settlement of the Lijiang basin. It was included in the 1997 World Heritage inscription as part of Greater Lijiang, together with Dayan and Baisha. Since the 2000s it has been heavily developed for tourism with new building in old style around the historic core.
What you’ll discover
A smaller, flatter version of Dayan: a cobbled square called Sifang Street, a spring-fed pool called Jiuding Dragon Pool with the Sansheng Palace above it, and the stone-slab Qinglong Bridge over the stream. Around the old centre is a large expanse of newly built guesthouse lanes, wide and neat, with boutique hotels, cafes and courtyard bars. The Tea Horse Road museum occupies a restored compound on the slope above the pool.
A little local insight
Good to know before you go
- Know which Shuhe you are in. The genuine old village is the few lanes immediately around Sifang Street, the dragon pool and Qinglong Bridge; most of what the taxi drops you at is twenty-first century construction. Walk to the pool first and work outward.
- This is the better base of the three if you want to sleep in a courtyard and not be woken by bars. Rooms are cheaper than Dayan for the same quality and the lanes are wide enough for a suitcase.
- The slope above the dragon pool, towards Longquan village, gets you to farmland and field views within ten minutes on foot, with Jade Dragon Snow Mountain across the fields.
- Naxi Dongjing music is performed in Shuhe, often for a donation rather than the ticketed price charged in Dayan.
- Buses and shared vans run frequently between Shuhe and Dayan's north gate and take about 20 minutes; a cycle on the dedicated path is also easy, as the ground between them is nearly flat.
When to come
Late afternoon into early evening, when the light is low on the stream and the day-trippers have gone back to Dayan. Spring and autumn for dry cobbles and clear mountain views.
Getting around
Noticeably easier than Dayan. The new lanes are broad and nearly level, with some wheelchair-feasible stretches, and the main square area is flat. The historic core is cobbled and uneven, and the climb to the Tea Horse Road museum and Sansheng Palace is stepped. A bad knee can manage most of the town.
Worth knowing before you go
Many visitors prefer Shuhe as a base over Dayan: guesthouses are cheaper and quieter, and buses and taxis back into the main old town run late into the evening.
