Discover Lijiang
Jade Dragon Snow Mountain
玉龙雪山
A 5,596 m glaciated massif 25 km north of Lijiang, sacred to the Naxi and never successfully summited. The cable cars put you on a boardwalk at 4,506-4,680 m, which is the easiest high-altitude glacier view anywhere in China.

The story
What makes this place special
Jade Dragon Snow Mountain is the glaciated massif 25km north of Lijiang, the southernmost glacier range in the northern hemisphere and the mountain the Naxi treat as the home of their protector god, Sanduo. Its highest point is Shanzidou at 5,596m, which has been climbed only once, by an American pair in May 1987, and remains closed to climbing. The mountain's glaciers have retreated markedly within living memory, which is visible in the bare rock below the present ice.
What you’ll discover
The park is a string of separate sites along one road rather than a single place: the meadow basin of Ganhaizi near the entrance, the Blue Moon Valley lakes, and three cable cars rising to different heights. The flagship is the Glacier Park cable car, which lifts you from about 3,350m to a platform at 4,506m directly beneath Shanzidou, from where a boardwalk staircase climbs to a viewing deck at about 4,680m. At that height you are walking on bare moraine beside the ice with very little air, and most visitors move slowly, stopping often.
A little local insight
Good to know before you go
- The altitude is the whole planning problem. Lijiang sits around 2,400m and the top boardwalk is near 4,680m, a gain of over 2,200m in a morning. People who are fine in Lijiang often find the last 170m of steps at the top genuinely hard, with headache, nausea and breathlessness. Climbing the boardwalk is optional: the 4,506m platform already gives the view.
- Give yourself at least two full nights in Lijiang before going up, and do not stack this with a Tiger Leaping Gorge hike or a night bus.
- Oxygen canisters and padded coats are sold at the lower station and in Lijiang old town, cheaper in town. One canister buys a few minutes of relief, not a solution.
- Glacier Park tickets are capped daily and sell out in peak season; they are released in advance through the scenic area's own channel and resellers hold blocks. Book several days out for July-August and the October holiday.
- The top cable car closes without warning for wind, ice or maintenance, often while the lower sites stay open. Check on the morning, and have Blue Moon Valley plus Spruce Meadow as the fallback rather than the disappointment.
- Everything inside the park runs on shuttle buses between sites, and the gaps between them eat time. A full visit including one cable car is a whole day, not a half day.
When to come
Clear, dry mornings from October to April show the summit; cloud builds from late morning year-round and the summer rains often hide the mountain completely. Go up on the first cable car of the day.
Getting around
Mixed. Ganhaizi and most of Blue Moon Valley are flat boardwalk and road, manageable with a wheelchair or a bad knee. The Glacier Park cable car itself is step-free to the 4,506m platform, and that platform is where the view is, so a visitor who cannot climb is not excluded. The boardwalk above it is several hundred steps at extreme altitude and is not wheelchair-accessible; a bad knee should not attempt it. Sedan-chair carriers operate on the upper boardwalk for a negotiated fee.
Worth knowing before you go
Lijiang sits at 2,400 m and the Glacier Park boardwalk is above 4,500 m. Do not go on your first day at altitude, and rent the down jacket and buy the oxygen can at the base station, where both are far cheaper than at the top.
