Lijiang Old Town (Dayan)

丽江古城(大研古城)

A UNESCO-listed Naxi town of cobbled lanes, spring-fed water channels and tiled roofs below Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, laid out with no city wall and no grid. It is touristy by day and genuinely beautiful at dawn, and it is the base almost every Lijiang trip is built around.

Free to walk the lanes, but a ¥50 per-person Ancient Town Maintenance Fee applies; since 1 Aug 2025 one payment is valid for 365 days with unlimited re-entry≈ US$7.45Half a day, plus an evening wanderPassport needed

The story

What makes this place special

Dayan is the old Naxi market town at the foot of Lion Hill, grown up around the seat of the Mu family, who governed Lijiang as hereditary tusi (local chieftains) under Ming and Qing appointment. It was a staging town on the tea-and-horse caravan routes between Yunnan and Tibet, and it has no city wall, unusually for a Chinese county town. A severe earthquake hit Lijiang in February 1996 and damaged much of the town; reconstruction was carried out under UNESCO guidance and Greater Lijiang, including Dayan and the villages of Shuhe and Baisha, was inscribed as a World Heritage Site on 4 December 1997.

What you’ll discover

A dense grid of cobbled lanes on a slope, with three channels of spring water running down beside the streets and small stone bridges crossing them every few metres. The natural centre is Sifang Street, a stone market square where tour groups gather for group Naxi dancing in the evenings; from there lanes climb west to Lion Hill and Mu Palace, and drop east towards Xinhua Street, which is now a near-continuous strip of bars. Most of the ground-floor rooms in the old courtyard houses are shops selling silver, dried flowers, drums, scarves and yak jerky, and much of what you walk past is trade rather than residence.

A little local insight

Good to know before you go

  • Be clear-eyed about what this is. Academic and press accounts put the proportion of original residents who have moved out at roughly 90 per cent or more, with houses let to businesses; the fabric is largely genuine Naxi carpentry, often rebuilt after 1996, but the life inside it is retail. Treat it as a beautiful shopping district with a heritage shell, not a living village.
  • Walk uphill and west, away from Sifang Street. The lanes above Mu Palace and around Guangyi Street still have residents, laundry and old people on stools. Anything within two minutes of Sifang Street at 20:00 is the loud version.
  • The water tells you where you are. The three channels all come from Black Dragon Pool at the north edge; water flows downhill and outward, so when you are lost, walk against the current to get back up towards Yuhe Square and the north gate, or with it to leave the town.
  • Shops on the main lanes mark up heavily and the silver is often not silver. If you want Naxi craft rather than souvenirs, Baisha village or the woodcarving workshops at Shuhe are a better bet.
  • There is a Lijiang old town maintenance fee collected separately from any attraction ticket, and spot checks happen at the entrances to Mu Palace, Lion Hill and Black Dragon Pool rather than at the town edges. Keep the receipt.
  • Nights are cold year-round at 2,400m even when the afternoon is hot. Carry a layer you can put on at dusk.

When to come

Early morning, between about 07:00 and 09:00, is the only time the lanes are quiet and the light reaches down into them; shops open late and the tour coaches arrive mid-morning. Spring and autumn are dry and clear; the rainy season from roughly June to September makes the cobbles slick.

Getting around

Difficult. The whole town is uneven river cobble on a continuous slope, with stepped lanes, high door sills into courtyards and no handrails. A wheelchair is not practical beyond the flat strip around Yuhe Square and the north entrance. A bad knee can manage the lower town if you plan a short loop and avoid the climb to Lion Hill, but expect to watch your feet the whole way; the stones are rounded and slippery when wet.

Worth knowing before you go

The ¥50 fee now covers Dayan (including Black Dragon Pool), Baisha and Shuhe for a full year, so pay once and keep the receipt or QR code on your phone instead of paying again in each village.
