Discover Lijiang
Lashihai Wetland
拉市海湿地公园
A shallow highland lake and Yunnan's first wetland reserve, where tens of thousands of migratory birds overwinter. For most visitors it is a half-day of horse riding on surviving Tea Horse Road trails plus a punt out onto the water.

The story
What makes this place special
Lashihai is a shallow, seasonally fluctuating lake in a basin southwest of Lijiang at roughly 2,440m, part of a wetland system that also includes Wenhai to the north and drains into the Jinsha River. It supplies drinking water to Lijiang and was designated a Ramsar wetland of international importance in 2004, as well as a provincial nature reserve. More than 100,000 waterbirds use it each year and 76 species of geese and ducks have been recorded, including the critically endangered Baer's pochard; fishing, hunting and poaching are banned inside the reserve.
What you’ll discover
An open, wide basin with reeds along the shore, flat farmland behind and the Jade Dragon massif visible to the north on clear days. In winter the water carries large rafts of ducks and geese. The tourist offer along the eastern shore is horse riding on a short marked circuit sold as the Tea Horse Road, plus dugout-style boat trips on the lake, and the lakeside road is popular with cyclists from Lijiang.
A little local insight
Good to know before you go
- Buy the ride or the boat at the reserve's own ticket points, not from touts on the Lijiang road. The standard complaint here is being intercepted, driven to a private stable and pressed into a much longer and more expensive package than agreed. Agree price, route and duration in writing before mounting.
- The birds are the real reason to come, and they are only here from roughly November to March. Outside those months you are paying for a horse ride beside a half-empty lake.
- The water level swings hugely between the dry and wet seasons, so photographs of a full blue lake and of a muddy grass flat are both accurate, just months apart.
- Bring binoculars. There are no hides and the birds sit well out from the shore.
- It is about 20-25 minutes by car from Lijiang old town, and it works best as a half day combined with the Wenhai or Qingxi road rather than a full-day commitment.
When to come
November to March for migratory birds, early morning for calm water and bird activity. Summer is the least rewarding time.
Getting around
The lakeshore road and the main viewing areas are flat and drivable, so a wheelchair user can reach a good vantage point and a bad knee is no obstacle to the viewing itself. The horse circuit and the boat landings involve uneven ground, mud and an unassisted step down into the boats; neither is suitable for a wheelchair.
Worth knowing before you go
Lashihai has a long-standing reputation for aggressive hard-selling — agree the exact route, duration and total price in writing before you mount a horse or step into a boat, and refuse mid-trip upgrades. Birdwatching is best October to April.
