Impression Lijiang
印象丽江
Zhang Yimou's open-air spectacle staged at 3,100 m on the Jade Dragon slopes, performed by hundreds of farmers and herders from local Naxi, Yi and Tibetan villages rather than professional dancers. The mountain itself is the backdrop.

The story
What makes this place special
Impression Lijiang is the open-air show staged in a purpose-built arena at Ganhaizi, at the foot of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. It premiered on the morning of 23 July 2006, directed by Zhang Yimou with Wang Chaoge and Fan Yue, after reported investment of around 250 million yuan. It runs about an hour and is performed by a cast of more than 500 local farmers drawn from around ten ethnic groups, including Naxi, Yi, Pumi, Tibetan and Miao, in chapters covering the caravan trade, drinking songs, a dance sequence and a ritual blessing. Unlike the earlier Impression Liu Sanjie, it was designed for daylight so that the mountain itself is the backdrop; officials also cited it as a way of spreading visitor load inside the park.
What you’ll discover
A circular open amphitheatre of stone tiers, with the mountain directly behind the stage and no roof. The performers come on in mass formation in red and ochre costume, with horses, drums and a great deal of shouting and stamping; there is little narrative and the effect is volume and colour against the snow peak. Seating is unreserved within your ticket tier and the whole thing is over in an hour.
A little local insight
Good to know before you go
- The mountain is half the show. If the peak is in cloud you are watching several hundred people dance in front of a grey wall. Judge the weather before committing the morning.
- Sit higher than you think. The formations are designed to be read from above, and the front rows see legs and dust rather than patterns.
- It is at roughly 3,100m, in the open, with no shade and no shelter. Sun burns fast here and a hailstorm can arrive in minutes; take a hat, sunscreen, a waterproof and a warm layer regardless of the forecast in town.
- The venue is inside the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain scenic area, so you need the park entrance and in-park transport as well as the show ticket, and you cannot do it as a standalone trip from town. Plan it as the first item of a mountain day, before a cable car.
- There are two separate big Lijiang shows: this one, outdoors by day at the mountain, and Lijiang Qianguqing, indoors in town. Make sure the ticket you bought is the one you meant.
When to come
The earliest daily performance, which gets the best chance of a clear peak before cloud builds, and the gentlest sun. Any dry season month; the summer rains frequently wash out both the view and the comfort.
Getting around
The arena is stepped stone tiers with no handrails and no lift, so a wheelchair is limited to the lowest accessible rows and staff assistance should be arranged in advance. A bad knee can manage a low row but will not enjoy climbing to the better upper seating. The venue sits at about 3,100m, which makes even modest step-climbing harder than it looks.
Worth knowing before you go
Seating is uncovered stone terracing at 3,100 m with fierce UV — take sunscreen, a hat and a windproof layer, and expect a cancellation refund rather than a rain cover if the weather turns.
