The story
What makes this place special
Pingyao is the most completely preserved Ming-Qing walled county town in China and was inscribed as a World Heritage site in December 1997, together with Shuanglin and Zhenguo temples outside the walls. The combined ticket was created to manage the roughly twenty ticketed courtyard museums inside the walls - banks, guildhalls, temples, the county office and the escort company - most of which are former merchant premises from the period when Pingyao financed a large part of the Qing economy. Walking the streets themselves is free; the pass is for interiors.
What you’ll discover
A pass covering a long list of small courtyard museums, typically counted as 21 or 22, spread across the old town, plus access onto the city wall. Each site is one or two courtyards with restored rooms, display cases and bilingual panels, and takes 15 to 40 minutes. In practice nobody sees them all and the quality varies enormously, from genuinely interesting interiors to a courtyard with four photographs in it.

Good to know before you go
- Four sites justify the pass and the rest are optional: the city wall, Rishengchang exchange house, the county government office, and the Confucian temple. Add the Escort Company Museum fifth if you have the appetite.
- The ones to skip without guilt: the smaller exchange shops (Weitaihou, Weishengchang and similar) duplicate Rishengchang with less to see, and several of the clan-house museums are a courtyard and a caption.
- The pass is registered to your passport or ID and is not transferable, so you cannot pass it to someone else in your group or buy a secondhand one.
- Pick up the site map at the ticket office and plan a loop. The sites are scattered, and walking back and forth across the town because you did them in listed order wastes an hour.
- The pass is valid for more than one day, so a sane plan is wall plus one or two sites on arrival evening, and the rest the following morning before the day-trip buses from Taiyuan arrive.
- Shuanglin Temple, Zhenguo Temple, the Wang and Qiao family compounds and the evening 'See Pingyao Again' show are all separate tickets and none are on this pass - budget for them independently.
- Motor traffic is restricted inside the walls, so you will be dropped at a gate. Factor a walk with luggage into your arrival.
When to come
Start early morning or late afternoon. Pingyao fills with coach groups from Taiyuan between roughly 10:00 and 16:00, and the courtyard museums are small enough that one group fills them. Spring and autumn; Shanxi summers are hot and the courtyards are shadeless.
Getting around
Varies site by site and overall it is difficult. The town's streets are stone-paved and uneven, the courtyard museums are entered over raised timber thresholds, and almost every one has steps between courtyards and into rooms. A wheelchair can move along the main streets with effort and enter some ground-floor courtyards with help, but a full museum circuit is not realistic. For a bad knee the thresholds and the cumulative kerb-stepping are the problem rather than any single climb. Choose three sites rather than ten.
Worth knowing before you go
Foreign passport holders need the physical passport at every gate, not a photo - the scanners are set up for Chinese ID cards and staff check passports by hand. Work out first whether you actually want 22 museums; many visitors are happier paying nothing and just walking the streets.
