Rishengchang Exchange House

日升昌票号

Founded in 1823, this courtyard was China's first draft bank - the place that invented remittance by paper note and made Shanxi merchants the country's bankers for a century. Small, but the single most historically important building in Pingyao.

The story

What makes this place special

Rishengchang, founded in 1823 on West Street, is generally described as China's first piaohao - a draft bank that let merchants deposit silver in one city and draw it in another, replacing the physical carting of bullion. It grew out of a dye business, built a network of branches across the empire and into Japan and Russia, and made Pingyao the clearing centre of Qing commerce for most of the nineteenth century. The piaohao system collapsed in the early twentieth century; the building is now a museum of it.

What you’ll discover

A deep sequence of courtyards behind an ordinary shopfront: the front counter where drafts were written, clerks' rooms, the manager's quarters, and at the back the strongrooms and silver vaults. The exhibits that matter are the actual draft notes with their anti-forgery devices, the ledgers, and the cipher systems used to authenticate transfers between branches. It is the one Pingyao museum where the content, not the architecture, is the point.

A little local insight

Good to know before you go

  • This is the single site to see if you only see one. The whole reason Pingyao exists as a preserved town is the banking system invented in this building.
  • Find the display of draft notes and the code system used to validate them - substituting characters from a poem for numerals - which is the cleverest thing in the town and easy to walk past.
  • Go to the rear courtyards. Visitors photograph the front counter and leave; the vaults and the manager's rooms at the back are where the layout makes sense.
  • Go first thing in the morning. It is the most visited interior in Pingyao and by mid-morning the narrow courtyards are a queue.
  • The Escort Company Museum nearby is the natural companion - armed escorts were how silver moved before drafts replaced them, and the two together tell one story.
  • English panels here are better than at most Pingyao sites, so this is also the place to actually read rather than just look.

When to come

Opening time, before the Taiyuan coaches arrive. Any season - it is mostly interior, which also makes it a good wet-weather choice.

Getting around

Difficult. It is a long chain of courtyards with raised stone thresholds at every gate, steps up into each room, and narrow doorways. A wheelchair can get into the first courtyard with help but not through the full sequence. A bad knee can do it but will be stepping up and down constantly over perhaps 40 minutes; there is little seating.

Worth knowing before you go

The back rooms show the cipher system clerks used to authenticate drafts - characters from a poem standing in for months and amounts. Ask for or read the English panels there; it is the part of the site that actually explains the business.
