Pingyao City Wall
平遥城墙
Six kilometres of 14th-century rammed-earth-and-brick wall with 72 watchtowers, encircling the best-preserved Ming and Qing county town in China. Walking the parapet is the one thing that makes the scale of old Pingyao legible.

The story
What makes this place special
Pingyao's wall was rebuilt in brick in 1370, early in the Ming, on earlier earthen foundations, and runs about 6.4 km around the town with roughly 3,000 crenellations and 72 watchtowers - a count traditionally read as the 72 disciples of Confucius and the 3,000 students. It stands over 12 m high. Unlike Datong's or Xi'an's, this is substantially original Ming fabric rather than a modern reconstruction, which is the main reason Pingyao carries World Heritage status. A section collapsed after heavy rain in 2021 and has been repaired.
What you’ll discover
A continuous brick rampart you can walk along the top of, looking down into grey-tiled courtyard roofs on one side and the modern town on the other, past square watchtowers and two barbican gates. The south gate is the usual starting point. A full circuit is around two hours of walking; most people do half of one side. The wall is the clearest way to understand the town's plan - you can see the whole grid from up there.
A little local insight
Good to know before you go
- Start at the South Gate. It is the most complete gate complex and the stretch east and west of it gives the best views over the old roofs.
- Do not attempt the full 6.4 km circuit unless you want a walk for its own sake. One or two sides is the sight; the rest repeats.
- Go at sunset. Low light across the tiled roofs is the single best thing in Pingyao, and the wall is where you see it.
- Look at the tower count and the crenellations - the 72 towers and 3,000 battlements are a deliberate Confucian reference, which is on no English sign.
- This is genuine Ming brickwork, which is why the surface is rough and the parapets are irregular. If you have also seen Xi'an's or Datong's walls, this is the one that is actually old.
- Access is via the combined ticket, so climb it the same day you start the pass rather than making a separate trip.
When to come
The last hour before sunset for light, or early morning for emptiness. Spring and autumn; there is no shade at all on the wall top.
Getting around
Getting up means a long steep ramp or stairs at the gates, and the top surface is original brick - uneven, with loose and worn patches and occasional steps between sections. A wheelchair can be pushed up the south gate ramp by a strong helper but the top surface is punishing and some stretches are not passable. A bad knee manages a short stretch; the ramps are the hard part, and coming down is harder than going up. There is no lift anywhere on the wall.
Worth knowing before you go
Go up in the hour before sunset: the low light across the grey tiled roofs of Ming-Qing Street is the shot everyone comes for, and the wall empties out as tour groups leave.
