Pingyao County Government Office
平遥县衙
The most complete surviving county yamen in China, with courtrooms, prison, granary and the magistrate's own quarters laid out along one axis. It shows in physical form how a Chinese county was actually administered under the Ming and Qing.

The story
What makes this place special
The yamen on Yamen Street was Pingyao's seat of government for centuries, combining the functions of administration, tax collection and the county court under a single magistrate - the arrangement that governed most of imperial China at local level. The surviving complex is a large multi-courtyard group with the court hall on the main axis, and it is the most complete county government office preserved in China, which makes it the best place to understand how imperial justice physically worked.
What you’ll discover
A deep axial compound: the gate, the main hall where cases were heard, the magistrate's private offices and residence behind it, a prison, a granary, and side courtyards for the clerks and the archive. The court hall with its bench, boards and kneeling stones is the centrepiece. There are costumed court reenactments staged in the main courtyard, commonly at late morning and mid-afternoon.
A little local insight
Good to know before you go
- Time your visit for a reenactment - they usually run around 11:00 and mid-afternoon. Without one the compound is rooms; with one the court hall makes immediate sense.
- Go into the prison and the granary at the sides. They are the parts visitors skip and they explain what a magistrate actually controlled.
- The compound is bigger than it looks from the street and is the longest of the Pingyao interiors - allow 45 minutes to an hour rather than the 20 you would give a bank museum.
- The buildings run on a strict front-to-back hierarchy, public to private. Walking it in order, rather than wandering, is how the layout reads.
- Do this and Rishengchang on the same morning - government and finance - and you have the two halves of what Pingyao was.
When to come
Late morning, to catch a reenactment before the lunchtime crowd peak. Spring and autumn; the courtyards are open and hot in summer.
Getting around
A long succession of courtyards on a gentle rising axis, with steps between each level and raised thresholds at every gate. The main courtyards are flat gravel and stone and a wheelchair can see the central spaces with a helper, including watching a reenactment from the courtyard, but the halls and rear residence need lifting over steps. For a bad knee it is manageable but the cumulative distance and step count is the highest of the Pingyao sites.
Worth knowing before you go
A costumed mock trial is staged in the main courtyard several times a day - entirely in Chinese, but worth timing your visit around because it fills the empty halls with some sense of what they were for.
