A taste of Qingdao

Chuange Fish Dumplings

船歌鱼水饺

A Qingdao-born restaurant group whose single idea is a seafood dumpling: cuttlefish-ink dumplings that come out jet black, mackerel dumplings, prawn dumplings. It is polished, reliable, reasonably priced and all over the city, which makes it the easiest first dinner in Qingdao for anyone who has just landed and does not want to negotiate a processing fee on day one.

Roughly ¥60-100 per person≈ US$8.94Multiple branches across Qingdao, including one on Minjiang 2nd Road in Shinan district.

What to order

Point at the Chinese. Staff will understand it even where the menu has no English at all.

  • Cuttlefish-ink dumplings (墨鱼水饺)
  • Mackerel dumplings (鲅鱼水饺)
  • Prawn dumplings (鲜虾水饺)
  • Cold jellyfish salad (凉拌海蜇)

What it actually tastes like

Mackerel dumplings taste strongly of oily fish — they are a Qingdao speciality and not a mild starter dumpling. Jellyfish is a crunchy, almost rubbery cold dish, which is the point of it. The black dumplings are coloured with cuttlefish ink and taste of the sea rather than of ink.

Allergens in this kitchen

This is the kitchen, not one dish. Woks, fryers, blanching water and utensils are shared in almost every Chinese restaurant, so for a serious allergy treat the whole premises as the unit rather than ordering around it.
