A taste of Qingdao

Haidao Yucun

海岛渔村

A long-running Qingdao seafood restaurant of the sit-down kind, doing the local canon — clams, prawns, mackerel, sea snails — without the market trip. It appears consistently in Chinese recommendation lists for Qingdao seafood at around ¥100 a head, which puts it between the beer houses and the hotel restaurants.

Around ¥100 per person≈ US$15Qingdao. Exact address and district unconfirmed.

Why come here

A place worth making time for

No Michelin or Black Pearl distinction found. Consistently listed in Chinese Qingdao food guides as a reliable mid-price seafood restaurant

What to order

Point at the Chinese. Staff will understand it even where the menu has no English at all.

  • Spicy stir-fried clams (辣炒蛤蜊)
  • Blanched local prawns (白灼大虾)
  • Stir-fried Dutch beans, the standard green dish (清炒荷兰豆)

What it actually tastes like

Shells and heads on. Nothing fermented or numbing; Shandong seafood cooking is mostly garlic, scallion, vinegar and restraint.

Allergens in this kitchen

shellfishfishsoygluten/wheatsesameegg

This is the kitchen, not one dish. Woks, fryers, blanching water and utensils are shared in almost every Chinese restaurant, so for a serious allergy treat the whole premises as the unit rather than ordering around it.
