A taste of Shanghai

Sole

唯

A Cantonese dining room in the Shanghai Centre on West Nanjing Road, opened in 2023 with an all-Cantonese brigade under a chef of more than twenty years' standing. The menu is long and classical: dim sum, roast meats, seafood, double-boiled soups and stir-fries. Useful as the non-Shanghainese entry on a short trip, and one of the easier star restaurants in the city to book and to bring a group to.

Why come here

A place worth making time for

Michelin one star 2026 (Shanghai) for Cantonese cuisine.

The house favourites

What to order

Point at the Chinese. Staff will understand it even where the menu has no English at all.

  • Scallop dumpling with crab roe (蟹籽带子饺)
  • Cantonese barbecue platter (烧味拼盘)
  • Double-boiled soup of the day (炖汤)
  • Deep-fried egg custard with chicken (炸蛋黄卷)

What it actually tastes like

Mostly gentle and clean-tasting, which makes it a safe harbour after a week of sweet-soy braising. The menu does run to the adventurous end of Cantonese cooking, including offal and organ dishes; read before you point. Double-boiled soups can be strongly medicinal in flavour.

Allergens in this kitchen

This is the kitchen, not one dish. Woks, fryers, blanching water and utensils are shared in almost every Chinese restaurant, so for a serious allergy treat the whole premises as the unit rather than ordering around it.
