A taste of Shanghai

Jingmei Wuxi Noodles

京梅无锡四方面馆

A small, plain noodle house in Jingan serving the cooking of Wuxi, two hours up the railway line, where the sweetness that Shanghai is teased for is taken even further. The core order is a bowl of noodles, in soup or dressed with scallion oil, topped with soy-braised pork ribs. It is the kind of place that seats twenty people and has no interest in impressing anyone.

The house favourites

What to order

Point at the Chinese. Staff will understand it even where the menu has no English at all.

  • Wuxi soy-braised pork rib noodle soup (无锡排骨面)
  • Scallion oil noodles with pork ribs (葱油拌面加排骨)
  • Three-white large wontons with whitefish, white shrimp and whitebait (三白大馄饨)
  • Xiaolongbao (小笼包)
  • Yulan cake (玉兰饼)

What it actually tastes like

Wuxi ribs are frankly sweet, closer to a glaze than a savoury braise, and this surprises most first-time foreign diners more than anything spicy would. The three-white wontons contain small river fish and shrimp and may carry fine bones.

Allergens in this kitchen

gluten/wheatsoyfishshellfish

This is the kitchen, not one dish. Woks, fryers, blanching water and utensils are shared in almost every Chinese restaurant, so for a serious allergy treat the whole premises as the unit rather than ordering around it.
