A taste of Shenzhen

Xin Ji Hakka Flavour

新记客家味道

A Hakka restaurant on the Michelin Bib Gourmand list, serving the salt-baked chicken, stuffed tofu and pork-belly dishes the Hakka migrants brought to the Pearl River Delta. Hakka is the plainest, most savoury of Shenzhen's regional cuisines. Use it to try the classic Hakka trio at a fair price.

What to order

Point at the Chinese. Staff will understand it even where the menu has no English at all.

  • Hand-torn salt-baked chicken (手撕盐焗鸡)
  • Stuffed tofu (酿豆腐)
  • Stir-fried pork tripe Hakka style (客家炒猪肚)

What it actually tastes like

Tripe and other offal appear on Hakka menus. Preserved mustard greens (梅菜) are salty and slightly funky. Chicken is served on the bone.

Allergens in this kitchen

soygluten/wheategg

This is the kitchen, not one dish. Woks, fryers, blanching water and utensils are shared in almost every Chinese restaurant, so for a serious allergy treat the whole premises as the unit rather than ordering around it.
