Discover Zhangjiajie

Golden Whip Stream

金鞭溪

A level 7 km streamside path running along the canyon floor between the pillars, under forest and past wild macaques. The one major walk in the park that needs no cable car and no climbing.

The story

What makes this place special

Golden Whip Stream is the valley-floor walk in the original Zhangjiajie Forest Park section, following a clear stream for roughly 7 km between the pillars from near the South Gate at Luogu Pagoda to Shuiraosimen, where the Bailong Elevator stands. It is named after the Golden Whip Rock that rises beside it. Unlike the clifftop areas, which were opened up by lifts, this is the oldest and simplest way to see the landscape, and it needs no ticketed transport at all.

What you’ll discover

A flat, paved, almost entirely level path along the stream with sandstone pillars rising directly out of the forest on both sides, so you look up at the formations rather than down on them. There are bridges, pools, named rocks and a resident macaque population. Walking the full length takes two to three hours at an easy pace; there is no climbing involved anywhere on it.

A little local insight

Good to know before you go

  • This is the walk to do if the plateau is in cloud. The valley works in any weather and often looks better in mist.
  • Walk it south to north - in at the South Gate, out at Shuiraosimen - so you finish at the Bailong Elevator and the shuttle network rather than back at a gate.
  • You do not have to do the whole 7 km. The first two kilometres from the South Gate have most of the named formations, and a shuttle picks up at the far end.
  • The macaques along this stream are the most aggressive in the park. Keep food inside a closed bag, do not hold anything out, and walk past rather than stopping to photograph them close up.
  • It is in deep shade for most of its length, which makes it the right choice for a hot afternoon and a poor choice for photographs at midday.
  • Combining this with the Ten-Mile Gallery in one day is the standard low-effort day and the sensible plan for anyone who cannot face the clifftop stairs.

When to come

Morning for light down the valley, or any hot afternoon for the shade. April to June and September to November; the stream is at its best after rain.

Getting around

The best walk in Zhangjiajie for limited mobility. The path is paved, wide and essentially flat for its whole length, with no stairs on the main route, and a wheelchair can be pushed along it - this is the one part of the park where that is straightforwardly true. Bridges are level or gently ramped. There are benches and toilets at intervals. The only caveats are total distance and the absence of any shortcut once you are in the middle, so turn back or plan to reach a shuttle point.

Worth knowing before you go

Walk it downstream from the Forest Park gate and finish at Shuiraosimen for the Bailong lift - that way the walk feeds into the plateau instead of doubling back. Keep food out of sight; the macaques snatch bags.
