Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon Glass Bridge

张家界大峡谷玻璃桥

A 430-metre glass-decked span hung 300 metres above a wooded gorge, briefly the world's longest and highest of its kind. It sits in a separate canyon park with a walking trail and boat ride below.

The story

What makes this place special

The Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon Glass Bridge spans the canyon in Cili county, east of the core scenic area, and opened to visitors in 2016 to a design by the Israeli architect Haim Dotan. Its glass deck made it an immediate national phenomenon; it was closed within days of opening because visitor numbers overwhelmed it, and it has operated on advance reservation with a daily cap ever since. It is a third separate ticketed area, unconnected to both the national forest park and Tianmen Mountain.

What you’ll discover

A long glass-decked suspension bridge across a steep green gorge, which you cross in a managed one-way flow. Below it, the Grand Canyon itself is a walking route down through the gorge - stepped plank paths, a slot canyon viewpoint, waterfalls, a glass-floored cliff walkway, sightseeing lifts and a boat on a reservoir at the bottom. There is also a bungee jump and a zip line off the bridge. The bridge crossing takes minutes; the canyon walk takes two to three hours.

A little local insight

Good to know before you go

  • Book online at least one or two days ahead. The bridge has run on a hard daily cap and advance reservation since it opened, and the on-site window often sells concession tickets only. Turning up without a booking is how people miss it.
  • Check what your ticket covers before you buy. Tickets are sold as separate combinations - bridge only, canyon only, or both - and the combined ticket is the only one that gets you the walk down the gorge as well as the crossing.
  • The canyon walk is the better half and almost everybody treats it as an afterthought. The bridge is a five-minute novelty; the gorge below it is a proper walk.
  • Do the bridge first, then walk down the canyon, and use the sightseeing lifts to get back up rather than re-climbing the gorge.
  • No tripods or selfie sticks on the deck, and the deck is crowded and managed - this is not a place for a leisurely photo session.
  • It is well outside the core scenic area and needs its own half day plus transport. Budget it as a separate excursion, not as an add-on to a forest park day.
  • The zip line and bungee are separately ticketed add-ons; the lifts that save you the climb back up may or may not be included depending on which combination you bought.

When to come

Morning, for the booked slot least likely to be crowded and for light in the gorge; the canyon floor is in shadow by late afternoon. April to June and September to October. The bridge closes in high wind, thunderstorms and ice.

Getting around

The bridge itself is level and step-free and a wheelchair can cross it; the approach from the car park and the security screening are also manageable. The canyon walk is not - it is hundreds of steps down stone and plank paths with no step-free alternative for the full descent, although the sightseeing lifts cover part of the vertical. For a bad knee, cross the bridge and skip the descent, or do the descent only if you are confident on long stair sequences going down.

Worth knowing before you go

Shoe covers are compulsory on the glass and there is a bag check - large rucksacks and tripods are refused. If you are nervous, the canyon trail below is the better half of the park anyway.
