Discover Zhangjiajie

Wulingyuan town

武陵源区

The small town at the park's eastern gate, with the widest choice of hotels, restaurants and transport in the area. Most independent visitors base themselves here rather than in Zhangjiajie city.

The story

What makes this place special

Wulingyuan is the district town immediately outside the core scenic area's East Gate - the Wulingyuan standard gate - and it exists almost entirely to serve the park. It is not a historic settlement: hotels, restaurants, bus stands and shops were built up around the gate as the park's visitor numbers grew after the 1992 World Heritage inscription. Zhangjiajie city, with the airport and the railway station, is a separate place about 32 km away, and confusing the two is the most common planning error visitors make.

What you’ll discover

A compact modern grid of hotels and guesthouses, restaurant streets, convenience shops and outdoor-gear sellers, with the park's East Gate at one end and the Xibu Street entertainment district at the other. There is nothing to sightsee. What matters is that you can walk to the gate in minutes, buy a ticket, eat Tujia food and sleep close enough to be at the Bailong Elevator before the queues form.

A little local insight

Good to know before you go

  • Stay here, not in Zhangjiajie city, if the national forest park is your priority. From Wulingyuan you are a short walk or taxi from the East Gate; from the city you lose an hour each way.
  • Stay in Zhangjiajie city instead if Tianmen Mountain and the glass bridge are your priority - the Tianmen cable car base is in the city.
  • The East Gate is the East Gate of the park, and the Wulingyuan standard gate is the same thing under its Chinese name. Hotels advertise proximity to one or the other and visitors book thinking they are different places.
  • Tujia food is the local cuisine - cured pork, sour-pickled vegetables, river fish, glutinous rice cakes - and the restaurants a block back from the gate are better and cheaper than those facing it.
  • Buy anything you need for the park here: water, a poncho, a battery pack, walking shoes. Prices inside the gate are several times higher and the selection is worse.
  • The park shuttle network starts at the gate and is included in park entry, so you need no taxi or tour once you are inside.

When to come

Irrelevant as a sight; relevant as a base in the park's good seasons, April to June and September to November. Evenings are when the restaurant streets come alive.

Getting around

Modern town with flat paved streets, kerb ramps in most places and lifts in the larger hotels, so it is straightforward for a wheelchair and for a bad knee. Taxis are plentiful. The practical point is that staying here cuts the daily travel burden to the park sharply, which matters more for limited mobility than any individual access feature.

Worth knowing before you go

Staying in Wulingyuan rather than Zhangjiajie city saves two hours of commuting a day. The trade-off is that Tianmen Mountain is then an hour away, so plan that as a travel-day sight.
