Discover Zhangjiajie
Xibu Street
溪布街
Wulingyuan's riverside pedestrian strip of bars, Xiangxi snack stalls and craft workshops, and the only real nightlife near the park. Free to walk and the obvious place to end a day on the trails.
The story
What makes this place special
Xibu Street - the name translates roughly as Western Street - is a purpose-built commercial and nightlife block in Wulingyuan town, developed to give park visitors something to do in the evening. It has no history; it is a themed retail and bar street of the kind now standard beside Chinese scenic areas, with Tujia and ethnic-minority motifs applied to new buildings.
What you’ll discover
A lit pedestrian street of bars, restaurants, snack stalls, souvenir shops and performance spaces, busiest from early evening onwards, with staged ethnic song and dance, drum performances and street food. It is loud, commercial and entirely aimed at visitors. An hour covers it.
A little local insight
Good to know before you go
- Treat it as dinner and a drink after a day in the park, which is all it is. Nobody should plan a day around it.
- The food stalls are a reasonable way to try Tujia snacks without committing to a restaurant, but the sit-down restaurants on the street charge park-adjacent prices; a block away is cheaper.
- The staged performances run to a schedule posted at the entrance. If you want them, check the board rather than wandering and hoping.
- It is in Wulingyuan town, which is another argument for basing yourself there rather than in Zhangjiajie city - the city's evening options are ordinary.
- It gets noisy late. If you have an early start for the Bailong Elevator queue, do not book a room overlooking it.
When to come
After dark, any evening in the park's season. Avoid it as a daytime destination; in daylight it is an empty shopping street.
Getting around
Flat, newly paved and pedestrianised, so it is easy for a wheelchair and for a bad knee, with no steps on the main street and shops at street level. Crowds in the evening are the only obstacle. Accessible toilets are available in the larger restaurants rather than on the street.
Worth knowing before you go
Come for the Xiangxi snacks rather than the bars - this is the easiest place in the area to try western Hunan food such as sour fish soup and glutinous rice cakes without a language struggle.
