The character of the place

Why stay here

The resort occupies Fayun village, a lane of stone-and-timber dwellings in a valley inside the West Lake Scenic Area, about 6 km west of the lake itself. Aman restored the houses rather than replacing them: 46 abodes in total, some over a century old, ranging from rooms and suites to free-standing two-storey villas with their own living areas and massage rooms. The valley is wrapped in tea fields and bamboo and sits on a pilgrimage circuit of seven Buddhist temples, Lingyin and Yongfu among them.

It is the only hotel in China where the accommodation is a surviving village inside a UNESCO-listed scenic area, and the walking is the product: you leave your door and you are on temple paths, not a road. For a traveller who wants Hangzhou's Buddhist landscape rather than its lakefront promenade, nothing else is close.

Fayun Pathway, the old stone lane that runs through the middle of the resort. It is a public right of way, so monks walking to Lingyin and villagers going about their day pass your front door, and the dining rooms are strung along it. Aman is usually criticised for sealing guests off from the place they are in; here it did the opposite, deliberately.

Make the stay your own

Rooms worth asking for

A Village Suite or a Villa rather than a Deluxe Room. The rooms are genuinely dark, which is what a 100-year-old stone house with small windows is, and the villas have the extra living space and light that makes three nights comfortable rather than atmospheric.

Note the exact room or suite name before opening the booking provider, along with any connecting-room, step-free access or celebration requests.

At the table

Dining & the evening ahead

Several venues along the Fayun Pathway including a steam house, a village-style Chinese restaurant and a tea house. The spread is deliberately informal; it is also the weakest part of the property.

Request restaurant availability alongside your stay. Tasting menus, private dining and dietary arrangements should be confirmed separately.

Time for yourself

Spa, pool & wellbeing

A large spa drawing on traditional Chinese medicine, set in gardens behind bamboo, tea bushes and magnolias. Guests who are sceptical of hotel spas in China consistently single this one out as the exception. Book it.

Ask which facilities are included with your room, whether treatments require advance reservations, and whether any seasonal closures affect your stay.

Before you decide

The most divisive Aman in China. Rooms are dark and some have no soaking tub. Food gets criticised repeatedly, with guests rating the Chinese restaurant and tea house below expectations and below other Amans. Bugs are a real issue in warm months, with multiple accounts of mosquitoes and large insects indoors, and at least one of a centipede in a bed. English is weaker among staff than the price implies. The public pathway cuts both ways: on a busy day the people walking past your door are not monks but day-trippers. And because ride-hailing cars are not allowed into the Lingyin scenic area, you are dependent on the hotel's own transfer, which has been quoted at ¥575 one way. One perk has also quietly evaporated: admission to the Lingyin and Feilaifeng scenic area became free from December 2025, with a real-name reservation made at least a day ahead, so the hotel arranging your temple tickets is now a convenience rather than a privilege. Pre-opening access to the temples is claimed by third-party guides but is not something Aman publishes; the monk-led tour and blessing comes as part of a specific two-night package.

Location. 22 Fayun Lane, West Lake Scenic Area. About 6 km from West Lake, immediately adjacent to Lingyin Temple and Feilaifeng.
