Banyan Tree Hangzhou
杭州西溪悦榕庄
The wetland itself. Xixi is a protected marsh of channels and reed beds that most visitors to Hangzhou never see, and being inside it, with punts and birdlife outside the door, is the one thing this hotel has that nothing else in the city does.

Why stay here
72 suites and villas, roughly half of each, spread through the Xixi wetland on the western edge of Hangzhou: reeds, canals, boats and birds rather than a lake view. Many of the units have private pools or gardens, and you move around the property partly by water.
It is the only luxury hotel in Hangzhou set in the Xixi wetland, which is a genuinely different landscape from West Lake and far emptier. For families and for anyone who wants three slow days with a boat and a spa rather than sightseeing, it works better than a lakefront hotel.

Rooms worth asking for
A villa with a private pool and water frontage rather than a suite. The suites are good; the villas are why you came.
Note the exact room or suite name before opening the booking provider, along with any connecting-room, step-free access or celebration requests.
Dining & the evening ahead
Chinese and international restaurants on site. Guests describe the food options as limited and the weakest part of the resort, which matters when there is nowhere to walk to for dinner.
Request restaurant availability alongside your stay. Tasting menus, private dining and dietary arrangements should be confirmed separately.
Spa, pool & wellbeing
The Banyan Tree spa is the strongest part of the property and consistently the most praised thing in guest reviews. If the spa is why you are booking a resort, this is the Hangzhou choice.
Ask which facilities are included with your room, whether treatments require advance reservations, and whether any seasonal closures affect your stay.

The hardware is ageing visibly. Guests describe the swimming pool as very old and the pool area and food as leaving a lot to be desired, and no renovation has been announced. The location is a real cost: 30-40 minutes from West Lake, nothing within walking distance, so every meal and every sight is a car journey. It does not hold Michelin Keys. Published unit counts vary between 69 and 72. It is the right answer for a wetland retreat and the wrong answer if you came to see Hangzhou.
Location. Xixi National Wetland Park, western Hangzhou. About 30-40 minutes by car to West Lake and the city centre; no walking to anything.
