Why stay here
A low-rise resort on a hillside tea plantation above a lake in Fuyang, about an hour southwest of central Hangzhou, with its own 18-hole golf course and a marina. It was one of the first properties in China built to an international resort standard with a Chinese architectural idea behind it, and it remains one of the quietest.
If you want the Jiangnan landscape of the Fuchun River valley, the one Huang Gongwang painted, this is the only serious hotel in it. The grounds are large, the guest count is low, and there is golf and water, which West Lake cannot give you.

Room counts published for it are a mess, with listings giving 87 rooms, 88 suites plus 10 villas, and a total of 202; we could not confirm a current figure, which is itself a sign of how little scrutiny the property gets. It is an independent hotel with no brand standard behind it and no Michelin Keys, and it opened in the mid-2000s, so parts of it are now old. An hour from Hangzhou means it cannot be a sightseeing base, and the golf-and-conference business is a large part of what fills it. Include it for the valley, not for the hotel.
