Bvlgari Hotel Shanghai

上海宝格丽酒店

The restored Chamber of Commerce building. Eight years of conservation work on a 1916 civic hall, now used as the hotel's event and bar space, which is a far more serious piece of heritage than most Shanghai hotels' claimed history.

The character of the place

Why stay here

82 rooms and suites, 19 of them suites, on the top eight floors of the 48-storey Bvlgari Tower on the north bank of Suzhou Creek, with interiors by Antonio Citterio Patricia Viel. Attached to the tower is the former Shanghai General Chamber of Commerce building, completed in 1916, which Bvlgari spent about eight years restoring and which now holds the ballroom, a whisky bar and a Cantonese restaurant.

The most comfortable rooms in Shanghai and the best spa in the city. It pairs a high-floor tower stay with a genuinely restored 1916 landmark next door, and it is on Suzhou Creek rather than the Bund, which means the same skyline without the tour buses. Two Michelin Keys.

Rooms worth asking for

A Suite facing south over the creek to the Bund and Lujiazui. The north-facing rooms look over Hongkou rooftops and lose the view that justifies the rate.

Note the exact room or suite name before opening the booking provider, along with any connecting-room, step-free access or celebration requests.

At the table

Dining & the evening ahead

Il Ristorante Niko Romito on the roof of the tower, the hotel group's flagship Italian; Bao Li Xuan for Cantonese in the heritage building; a whisky bar. Sources disagree on the Cantonese restaurant's romanisation and on whether the Italian currently holds a Michelin star, so check the restaurant listing rather than the hotel's.

Request restaurant availability alongside your stay. Tasting menus, private dining and dietary arrangements should be confirmed separately.

Time for yourself

Spa, pool & wellbeing

The Bvlgari Spa, with a 20-metre green-glass-mosaic pool, is widely rated the best hotel spa in Shanghai. If you book one spa in the city, book here.

Ask which facilities are included with your room, whether treatments require advance reservations, and whether any seasonal closures affect your stay.

Before you decide

It opened in June 2018 and is the least distinctive of Shanghai's top hotels in character: very well made, very expensive, and in the words of one guest, hard to say it is better than the others. At 82 rooms sitting above a residential and office tower, arrival is through a shared podium rather than a hotel of its own. The location descriptions in third-party listings are unreliable, with several placing it on the Bund or near West Nanjing Road when it is across the creek in Hongkou. Expect a 10-minute walk or a short taxi to anywhere you actually want to be.

Location. Hongkou, north bank of Suzhou Creek near its mouth at the Huangpu. A 10-15 minute walk across to the Bund and the Rockbund.
