Why stay here

55 shikumen lane houses, plus 40 long-stay residences, in the Jian Ye Li estate in Xuhui, the former French Concession. The estate was built in the 1930s by the French property company Foncière et Immobilière de Chine as 22 rows of stone-gate lane houses, over 200 two-storey units in all; what survives is the largest remaining shikumen block in Shanghai. The hotel occupies the restored western lanes, with interiors by the late Jaya Ibrahim. Villas come as one-, two- or three-bedroom houses.

The only hotel in Shanghai where you sleep in a shikumen house rather than a room, and the only one at this level inside the plane-tree streets of the old French Concession rather than on the Bund or in Pudong. Two Michelin Keys. Each villa has its own front door off a private lane, which means no corridors and no lobby traffic.

Le Comptoir de Pierre Gagnaire, the French chef's first restaurant in mainland China, in the lanes downstairs from your house. Plus the Auriga spa and a 'personal assistant' model where one person handles the whole stay rather than a front desk.

Rooms worth asking for

A two-bedroom villa, or a one-bedroom with a courtyard. Every villa is spread over multiple floors, so ask specifically about stair count and whether your house has outdoor space before you confirm.

Le Comptoir de Pierre Gagnaire for French, plus the Library for afternoon tea and a Chinese kitchen. Guests rate the food good rather than remarkable for the money.

Before you decide

The stairs are the complaint that comes up most: a lane house is three or four narrow storeys with no lift, so anything you forget upstairs is a climb, and the format does not suit anyone with mobility issues or heavy luggage. Value for money is the lowest-scoring category in its own guest ratings. Service is mostly very good but there are credible reports of gaps, including an understaffed afternoon tea and one detailed review arguing that the personal attention does not match the design. And a point the hotel will not raise: the eastern half of Jian Ye Li was demolished and rebuilt rather than restored, so the block is partly reconstruction, and the original residents were moved out to make the project possible.
