Why stay here
A 235-room Art Deco-styled hotel at 32 The Bund, on the corner where the waterfront meets the former British Consulate garden. It opened in October 2009 and was the first substantial new building permitted on the Bund in some sixty to seventy years, which is why it looks like a 1930s block but has 2009 plumbing.
The best-located luxury hotel in Shanghai. You are on the Bund itself with the Huangpu and the Pudong skyline in front and the old consulate lawns beside you, in a building designed from scratch as a modern hotel rather than squeezed into a heritage shell. Two Michelin Keys, and the operation is the most consistently drilled on the Bund.
Sir Elly's Terrace, the rooftop terrace looking straight down the river at Lujiazui, and a Rolls-Royce and MINI house-car fleet. The corner position means its Bund views include the Bund, which the hotels actually on the waterfront row cannot offer.
Rooms worth asking for
A Deluxe Bund View room or above, on a high floor. The city-view rooms are the same room without the thing you came for, and the price gap is smaller than the experience gap. Rooms are 60 square metres and up at entry level, which is generous for the Bund.
Note the exact room or suite name before opening the booking provider, along with any connecting-room, step-free access or celebration requests.
Dining & the evening ahead
Five restaurants and bars. Yi Long Court for Cantonese holds one Michelin star in the 2026 Shanghai guide and has been recognised ten years running; Sir Elly's is the rooftop European restaurant; the Lobby does the Peninsula afternoon tea.
Request restaurant availability alongside your stay. Tasting menus, private dining and dietary arrangements should be confirmed separately.
Spa, pool & wellbeing
A large spa with an indoor pool and a sun terrace. Good, conventional, not a reason in itself.
Ask which facilities are included with your room, whether treatments require advance reservations, and whether any seasonal closures affect your stay.

Yi Long Court held two Michelin stars in earlier guides and now holds one; a lot of material still circulating, including hotel brochures, quotes the old figure, and the same goes for a star at Sir Elly's. The building is now sixteen years old and the Art Deco pastiche is a matter of taste: it is a 2009 building dressed as 1930, which some guests find less convincing than the genuinely old hotels across the road. The Bund location brings crowds and tour groups to the doorstep from mid-morning, and the hotel's own arcade and traffic make arrival less calm than its interior suggests.
Location. 32 The Bund, Huangpu, at the north end by the former British Consulate. Walk to Nanjing East Road, the Rockbund and Yuyuan.
