The character of the place

Why stay here

About 260 rooms across two parts: the former Shanghai Club at 2 The Bund, the 1910 British gentlemen's club building at the southern end of the waterfront, which holds roughly 20 heritage suites and the Long Bar; and a purpose-built tower behind it with the rest of the rooms. The Long Bar is a reproduction of the club's original 34-metre counter, once claimed as the longest bar in the world.

It is the only hotel that puts you inside a genuine Bund-front landmark rather than beside one. The heritage suites in the old Shanghai Club are the most atmospheric rooms on the waterfront, and the position at the Bund's quiet southern end is less overrun than the middle. One Michelin Key.

The Long Bar. Drinking in the room where 1920s Shanghai's British commercial establishment did its drinking, at a reconstruction of the bar that made it famous, is the most direct contact with old Shanghai available to a hotel guest.

Make the stay your own

Rooms worth asking for

One of the roughly 20 suites in the heritage Shanghai Club building. They are the entire point of choosing this hotel; the tower rooms are a good Waldorf anywhere with a view of a famous street.

Note the exact room or suite name before opening the booking provider, along with any connecting-room, step-free access or celebration requests.

At the table

Dining & the evening ahead

The Long Bar, Pelham's for European, a Cantonese restaurant and the Salon de Ville for afternoon tea. Nothing starred; the bar is the draw.

Request restaurant availability alongside your stay. Tasting menus, private dining and dietary arrangements should be confirmed separately.

Time for yourself

Spa, pool & wellbeing

A spa and indoor pool in the tower. Pleasant, unremarkable.

Ask which facilities are included with your room, whether treatments require advance reservations, and whether any seasonal closures affect your stay.

Before you decide

Service has been the recurring criticism here for more than a decade, including unready rooms at check-in, patchy housekeeping and inattentive bar service; recent aggregate scores have recovered, but it does not have the consistency of the Peninsula up the road. Value for money is its weakest guest-rated category and guests have flagged poor Wi-Fi. The heritage building is a small part of the hotel and most guests stay in the tower, where the rooms are now over fifteen years old. Published room counts disagree, 257 or 260.

Location. 2 The Bund, Huangpu, at the southern end by Yan'an East Road. Walk the Bund north, or to Yuyuan and the Old City.

Prices are indicative, not live availability. Confirm the total including taxes, meals, transfers and cancellation terms on the provider’s checkout before committing.
