The character of the place

Why stay here

145 rooms in a new tower at 199 Nanjing East Road, paired with the adjoining 1929 Art Deco building that was the Shanghai Power Company headquarters. Ian Schrager worked with the Shanghai practice Neri & Hu: the historic building holds the restaurants, bars, rooftops and spa, and the new tower holds the rooms.

It is the only hotel in this bracket in Shanghai that people actually go out in. The rooftop bars draw a local crowd rather than only guests, the design is the sharpest in the city, and the position on Nanjing East Road puts the Bund, the Rockbund and People's Square all within a walk.

The rooftop. Several levels of bar and restaurant in and on top of the 1929 power company building, with an unobstructed line down to the Bund, and a crowd that is not staying in the hotel. It is a destination in its own right, which almost no hotel in China manages.

Make the stay your own

Rooms worth asking for

A Studio Suite or above with a Bund-facing aspect. Entry rooms are well designed but on the small side by Shanghai luxury standards, and the EDITION look is dark, which makes a small room feel smaller.

Note the exact room or suite name before opening the booking provider, along with any connecting-room, step-free access or celebration requests.

At the table

Dining & the evening ahead

Canton Disco for Cantonese, HIYA for Japanese, Shanghai Tavern, and the Roof. Nothing starred, but the bars are the best in any Shanghai hotel.

Request restaurant availability alongside your stay. Tasting menus, private dining and dietary arrangements should be confirmed separately.

Time for yourself

Spa, pool & wellbeing

A spa in the heritage building. Secondary to the bars.

Ask which facilities are included with your room, whether treatments require advance reservations, and whether any seasonal closures affect your stay.

Before you decide

It is a nightlife hotel, and that cuts both ways: the public areas are busy with non-residents from the evening onwards, music carries, and the lobby is not where you go for quiet. Rooms are smaller than at the Peninsula or Bulgari for a reason that nobody advertises, which is that the budget went into the public floors. EDITION service is deliberately informal and reads as inattentive if you expect Mandarin Oriental grooming. One Michelin Key, which puts it a tier below the Peninsula, Bulgari, Capella and Amanyangyun. Opening date is given as 2017 or 2018 depending on the source.

Location. 199 Nanjing East Road, Huangpu, between People's Square and the Bund. Nanjing East Road metro is at the door.

Prices are indicative, not live availability. Confirm the total including taxes, meals, transfers and cancellation terms on the provider’s checkout before committing.
